It’s Not How Much We Differ, It’s How Much We Share

Posted by Frank Chi on June 23, 2005 - 12:58pm.

Last night Mayor DeStefano joined 3 other Connecticut mayors in a discussion forum at the New London Day.  The topic was whether New London should adopt a Mayoral system or a “managerial” system for the city’s government.  The mayors all shared their insight onto how to lead New London towards a more prosperous future.

One thing about Mayor DeStefano is that he is always in his element in this kind of setting.  Talking about what works and how it works lets him articulate the experiences in leadership he’s learned in his 12 years as Mayor.  Mayor DeStefano talked extensively about the socioeconomic dynamic of governing a city with racial and class distinctions.  He also stressed that electing a central figure to lead can help bring people together instead of driving people apart.

Politics and elections should be a tough fight, that’s what the entire political process is about.  But a struggle of ideas should also lead to a majority.  Once a majority emerges, political leaders must work to unite our politically fractured constituents and bring people together around shared interests.  The Mayor put this very poignantly last night: “People will not be defined by how they are different, but by what they share.  That’s what political leadership does.”

This Week on the DeStefano Campaign

Posted by Aldon Hynes on May 2, 2005 - 4:48am.

Well, unless thirty two more people signed up over the weekend which haven’t been reflected in the count, it looks like we have just missed meeting our goal of doubling our email list by the end of the month. Nonetheless, reaching 1,868 people on the mailing list is a great step forward. Now, the question is, how will you get involved.

Today is election day in several municipalities. It is a great chance to get out and get involved in local elections, a great way to learn the ropes. Volunteers from the DeStefano campaign will be helping with get out the vote (GOTV) efforts in several towns and the Mayor is expected to stop by at some of these efforts.
