Senate President Endorses DeStefanoManchester Journal Inquirer May 19, 2006 By Keith M. Phaneuf New Haven Mayor and Democratic gubernatorial contender John DeStefano Jr. picked up a key endorsement Wednesday from Senate President Pro Tem Donald E. Williams Jr., D-Brooklyn. DeStefano, who is expected to face Stamford Mayor Dannel P. Malloy in an Aug. 8 gubernatorial primary, also received an endorsement this week from the state's largest AFL-CIO bargaining unit. "I'm impressed with John DeStefano's vision for his city and for the state of Connecticut," Williams said. "This is a critical time and we need a governor who will move this state forward." Williams added that DeStefano "was a tremendous help this past legislative session in regards to jobs, education, and school nutrition. I'm impressed with his detailed plans on health care and energy, which will serve as a roadmap for the future. This state needs to move in a new direction." Williams is one of the two highest-ranking legislators in the General Assembly. The other, House Speaker James A. Amann, D-Milford, has endorsed Malloy. DeStefano, who also has won endorsements from about 40 Connecticut labor organizations, received the backing this week from Council 4 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Connecticut's largest AFL-CIO union. "We enthusiastically support John because he understands and embraces the challenges that face hard-working people. The issues that matter to us - like universal health care, quality education, property-tax reform, and workers rights - matter to John DeStefano," Council 4 Executive Director Salvatore Luciano said. Council 4 represents more than 35,000 employees throughout Connecticut and is affiliated with the 1.4 million-member AFSCME International Union based in Washington, D.C. |
