Norwich Bulletin: DeStefano Plans Dairy Farmer AidThe Norwich Bulletin July 13, 2006 By Ray Hackett Lebanon - Democratic gubernatorial candidate New Haven Mayor John DeStefano unveiled his plan to aid Connecticut dairy farmers Wednesday, proposing a six-point plan that would include a state milk subsidy program, a dairy insurance fund and marketing strategy for the products produced. "Dairy farming is not only important to the state's economy, it's a character of the state," DeStefano said during a campaign stop at Graywall Farms in Lebanon. "It's who we are and we don't have to sacrifice one for the other." DeStefano's dairy proposal is one of a line of programs outlined over the past several weeks as he battles Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy in a Democratic primary next month. Malloy, the endorsed candidate, also has been crisscrossing the state releasing his own programs. Tuesday, Malloy was at Electric Boat talking about his jobs programs. The two Democratic contenders will square off in a televised debate Tuesday at the Garde Arts Center in New London. "It's good to hear what they have in mind," said Peter Orr, owner of the Fort Hill Farm in Thompson, one of six eastern Connecticut dairy farms in a collaborative that produces The Farmer's Cow milk. "Given the difficulty we're facing these days, it's reassuring that people in the political process are concerned." DeStefano was joined at the farm by Senate President Donald Williams, D-Brooklyn, state Sen. Edith Prague, D-Columbia, and State Rep. Kevin Ryan, D-Montville. "It helps to have them here," said Lincoln Chesmer, who owns Graywall Farm with his father, Robin. "They have no idea what it's all about, what we do. So it's good to have them come out and see how much goes into it, and how much goes out." |
