Worth Noting: A New Haven Presence Covets the Governor's Seat

By Jeff Holtz, New York Times
March 07, 2004

“Mr. DeStefano listed the state's lag in job development, its traffic congestion, the inability of its cities to grow and sprawl into its rural areas as the most critical issues.”

John DeStefano Jr. of New Haven became second big-city mayor in the state to officially become a candidate for the 2006 gubernatorial race, when he registered with the secretary of state's office at the end of last month.

Mr. DeStefano, a Democrat, follows Stamford's Democratic mayor, Dannel Malloy, who earlier this year became the first of what is now four candidates with a registered committee.

"The time is right for me, and it's right for the state," Mr. DeStefano said. "After 11 years as mayor of New Haven, I feel good about what people's expectations and impressions of the city were when I took office, as compared to now."

Mr. DeStefano listed the state's lag in job development, its traffic congestion, the inability of its cities to grow and sprawl into its rural areas as the most critical issues.

"Job growth is essential to the well-being of the state," he said. "The solution to job growth is to understand what areas you are competitive in, and that you are not going to be all things to all people."

Mr. DeStefano also said that the way he had conducted city business helped make him an attractive choice among what he thinks will be a "robust" group of candidates.

"The voters and the political system are going to look for men and women who have a track record of operating in the public sector with a set of values that serves the public interest rather than private interests," he said. "All of us who come into the field are going to be scrutinized."

Mr. DeStefano, who was re-elected to a sixth mayoral term last year, said he would also run again for mayor in 2005.
