New Haven moved a step closer to becoming the first city in Connecticut to implement citywide broadband wireless service. Earlier this month city officials selected Civitium, LLC, a consulting firm for municipal broadband and digital community initiatives, to provide strategy, business planning and technical advisory services for the implementation of a citywide wireless network. The city will pay Civitium approximately $57,000 to complete a feasibility study, facilitate a decision on a business model for public access, inventory relevant city-owned assets, complete a preliminary radio frequency (RF) study and analyze various costs and benefits of a citywide wireless network.
"This new technology is a perfect fit for New Haven, the educational and cultural capital of Connecticut," says New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr., who has long advocated for a wireless network in the city. "A wireless New Haven will help grow jobs, attract visitors, and improve the quality of life for residents."
City officials says they expect the initial planning process for the network to occur over the next two months, and will then determine what actions to take next.
Based in Alpharetta, Ga., Civitium has provided advisory services on strategy, policy, business planning, RFP development and analysis, stakeholder assessment and technology issues for the cities of Houston, Tex.; Miami Beach, Fla.; Philadelphia, Pa.; and Portland, Ore.
