The year came in like a lamb and left like a lion for Mayor John DeStefano Jr.'s gubernatorial campaign. The Democrat started 2004 with no money and little organization.

But he finished the year with $1.4 million in the bank — more than either of his competitors — seven paid campaign staffers, a showy Web site run by Howard Dean's former Web team and a growing network of supporters and campaign contributors.The gubernatorial election is in 2006, still almost two years away.
"We began at point zero and ... we'll end the year in the strongest position of anybody running for governor at this point," DeStefano said.
The task for 2004 was to get a campaign off the ground and lay groundwork for fund-raising. Of that, DeStefano says, mission accomplished.
The goal for 2005 will be to press the flesh in other parts of the state and continue to build networks, the mayor said.
"We'll need to listen to people, excite people, engage them," De-Stefano said. "The message is clear. Our families are not doing as well as they can."
DeStefano said support for the campaign snowballed in 2004 as his message of "excellence in Connecticut" swept across the state.
"The real corruption in Connecticut that persists is the corruption of low expectations," DeStefano said. "That we don't expect to be first at anything in this state except men('s) and women's basketball."
