New Haven: John DeStefano – Democratic candidate for governor - “It is ironic that on the same day the Governor will stand with Sen. John McCain and portray herself as a reformer; it’s revealed that another key member of her staff acted unethically. It’s business as usual with the Governor. I believe Gov. Rell had no idea that her campaign manager was interfering with what was supposed to be an independent investigation – and that’s exactly the problem. Once again, Gov. Rell was in the dark about a major issue affecting her administration.

Clearly, it was inappropriate for Gov. Rell’s campaign manager to interfere in what was supposed to be an independent investigation by the State Elections Enforcement Commission into illegal fundraising by Gov. Rell’s administration. The Commission is supposed to be a watchdog agency, independent of political pressure. Instead, Gov. Rell’s campaign manager tainted the investigation and undermined its credibility.

Today, I am requesting that the State Elections Enforcement Commission review the manner in which the investigation was conducted to determine what extent political pressure affected the outcome. Gov. Rell should also take responsibility for her campaign manger’s actions. It is unacceptable that two key members of her staff, first Lisa Moody and now Kevin Deneen, have acted inappropriately. It is even more unacceptable that in both cases Gov. Rell has refused to take responsibility.”
