John DeStefano stands with local highschool and college students in opposition to  the budget missadventures of Pres. Bush and Gov. Rell.

New Haven: John DeStefano – a Democratic candidate for governor- joined high school and college students at a news conference at Tweed Airport - where the President will arrive tomorrow – to protest the President’s proposed budget and urge Gov. Rell to stand-up for Connecticut families during her visit with the President. The U.S House will vote on its budget – which is similar to the President’s – on Wednesday.

"I don’t fault Gov. Rell for meeting with President Bush but I do call on her to stop carrying Bush’s water against working families” said DeStefano. “Not only has the President made bad choices in going to war in Iraq and failing to protect the people of the Gulf Coast, but both he and Rell have consistently paid for their bad policies on the backs of working families.”

The President’s proposed budget includes cuts to public education, job training initiatives, and college loan programs. If the budget is adopted, Connecticut would lose more than $80 million of Federal funding for K-12 education over five years. In addition, Connecticut would lose nearly $13 million in funding for vocational and adult education.

The President is also proposing immediate and substantial cuts to Community Block Grants ($500 million), cancer research ($40 million), and freezing the maximum Pell Grant award at $4,050 – the same amount as 4 years ago.

“The President’s budget is bad for Connecticut, and frankly, so is the Governor’s. She takes a page right out of the Bush playbook when she chooses the wealthy over working families.” said DeStefano. Gov. Rell wants to eliminate the estate tax – giving more tax breaks to the very wealthy – and she has not supported the implementation of the State Earned Income Tax Credit – which would immediately help low income families make ends meet. It’s time Gov. Rell starts working for all of Connecticut.
