New Haven: John DeStefano – Democratic candidate for Governor – officially kicked off his campaign today, Monday March 20, with rallies and speeches in New Haven and Hartford. The events at New Haven’s City Hall – noon - and the Old State House in Hartford - 2:30 p.m.- attracted hundreds of supporters from across Connecticut.
DeStefano, with his family by his side, announced what his campaign for governor will be about and what issues will define the race. “I am running for governor to give a choice to those middle class and working families who are being squeezed,” said DeStefano. “This campaign will be about creating economic growth, jobs, and financial security for the hard working families of this State. Gov. Rell hasn’t done this - but I will.”
DeStefano described how under 12 years of Republican Governors, Connecticut families have fallen further and further behind. “Today, working and middle-class families are finding it more and more difficult to make ends meet,” said DeStefano. “You’re overtaxed, under-served, ignored and falling behind – no matter how hard you work, no matter how long you work.”
DeStefano also offered specifics on what he would do to solve the middle class squeeze and protect Connecticut’s quality of life. “Over the coming months, I will talk with Connecticut about how we will create economic growth and jobs and provide help to the hard-working families of our state.”
Promising common sense solutions mixed with bold ideas, DeStefano laid out five issues that will define his campaign; universal healthcare, workforce development and public education, property tax reform, a strategic plan to make Connecticut a top ten state in job growth, and opposition to repeal of the estate tax.

“No sharper distinction exists between me and my two opponents for governor than their determination to repeal the estate tax,” said DeStefano. “I believe it’s a fair and progressive tax, one that affects only the top 2 percent of Connecticut’s wage earners. Rather than giving another tax break to the wealthiest of Americans – as President Bush has been doing for 6 years – let’s use those resources to support Connecticut’s families.” Specifically, DeStefano proposed using the estate to tax to fund tax breaks for college savings accounts or long term care for the elderly.DeStefano’s official campaign kick-off comes one day before the delegate selection process begins for the Democratic convention. The DeStefano campaign has won the endorsement of dozens of labor unions representing 100,000 men and women, Democratic activists, and elected officials, including Lt. Gov. Kevin Sullivan, U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, and U.S. Rep. John Larson. In addition, the DeStefano campaign has raised more than $2.8 million – more than any Democratic candidate for governor in Connecticut history.
