DeStefano: Malloy Doesn't Get It, Connecticut Families Need Help With Rising Health Costs

April 09, 2006

New Haven---- Stating that “Dan Malloy doesn’t get it, Connecticut’s health care crisis is about people who have insurance, as well as people who don’t,” Democratic gubernatorial candidate John DeStefano today said Connecticut voters now have a real choice between the candidates on who supports major health care reform.

Just hours after DeStefano unveiled his universal health care plan, Connecticut CAN! (Cover All Now), Malloy told Channel 8’s Mark Davis he didn’t see the need for such a plan.

The following is from Wednesday evening’s 6 p.m. news on WTNH Channel 8:

Davis: DeStefano's opponent for the nomination tells me he doesn't think such a far reaching, state-wide plan is necessary.

Malloy: "There are 400,000 people without insurance in the state of Connecticut. The rest of the state has insurance, the idea that we need to replace that system overnight and as a single state, doesn't make any sense to me," says Dannel Malloy, (D) for Governor.

“The current health care system is failing Connecticut’s families and businesses.  Families are being stretched thin by rising health care costs, and businesses are forced to move out of state or lay-off workers because premiums are so high. Dan Malloy offers no help to these families and businesses,” said DeStefano.

“Connecticut families deserve a governor who will work to make health care more affordable and accessible. Jodi Rell hasn’t done it. Dan Malloy offers more of the same. I support making the major changes we need to make health care more affordable and accessible to Connecticut families, “ said DeStefano.

What would John DeStefano’s plan do for Connecticut’s families and businesses?

Here’s what the New Haven Register said this morning about it:

“New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr. has proposed a universal health care plan for Connecticut that would reward participating businesses with a major cut in corporate income taxes, while providing basic prevention-based coverage for all.
It shares the cost of health care among the individual, businesses and the state; expands the pool of participants by combining the small group and individual markets; offers a basic plan that can be upgraded; and allows portability.” – Mary O’Leary, New Haven Register, April 13th 2006.

“Dan Malloy’s health care proposal would affect just 20% of the 356,000 people who are uninsured and it would do nothing to drive down costs for families and businesses that already pay for health insurance. We can do better,” said DeStefano.
