"In a state that's seen stagnant job growth, where many working and middle-class families are struggling to make ends meet, President Bush's budget cuts in education, health care, and job training compound the agony. Connecticut families deserve to hear from Gov. Rell how she's going to address the cuts that hurt Connecticut families and children, and how she's going to bring along her two Republican allies — Congresswoman Nancy Johnson and Congressman Chris Shays -- who have voted for similarly hurtful budget reductions. Gov. Rell cannot continue to remain silent on these issues,” said DeStefano, the New Haven mayor.“President Bush’s proposed budget bills cut federal tuition assistance that may force thousands of Connecticut students to leave school, cut funds for job training and assistance for dislocated workers and slash funds for education and community policing that make it more difficult for teachers to teach and for police officers to keep our communities safe. I look forward to hearing Gov. Rell say how she will fight the president's proposed cuts and how she will get Connecticut's Republican members of Congress to join her," said DeStefano.
"Bush’s policies have created two Americas---one of tax cuts for the rich and another in which the middle class, seniors, and veterans get shortchanged on health care, education, college tuition, and care for the elderly. Gov. Rell must offer real solutions in Wednesday's speech prevent Bush’s budget policies from further dividing Connecticut into the haves and have-nots,” said DeStefano.
