DeStefano asks Wal-Mart to do the Right Thing - Stock 'Morning After Pill'

Calls on Gov. Rell to Stand-Up to Wal-Mart
February 20, 2006

New Haven: John DeStefano, Jr. – a Democratic candidate for governor – Monday called on the 20 Wal-Mart pharmacies in Connecticut to begin stocking and selling emergency contraception, otherwise known as the “morning after pill.” In a letter sent to the Store Manager of the New Haven Wal-Mart and to the company’s national headquarters, DeStefano requested that the pharmacies reverse the ban on selling the product – as they have just done in Massachusetts – and truly make women’s health a priority.

“Wal-Mart should do the right thing and stock the morning after pill. No woman at risk for unintended pregnancy, including victims of sexual assault,   should be turned away by Wal-Mart and forced to find another pharmacy,” said DeStefano. “Wal-Mart has said it’s reviewing its national policy on emergency contraception – so it’s imperative its decision makers hear from concerned citizens now. I commend State Comptroller Nancy Wyman for her recent letter to Wal-Mart and I hope Gov. Rell will join me in standing up to Wal-Mart on this important women’s health issue.”

On Feb. 14th, two weeks after three women sued Wal-Mart for failing to carry the emergency contraception, the Massachusetts Pharmacy Board decided Wal-Mart pharmacies in the Bay State would be required to sell the product. Currently, Wal-Mart carries the pill only in Illinois, where it is required by state law.

DeStefano has a proven track record on improving women’s health care, including innovative initiatives related to domestic violence, teen pregnancy, infant mortality, and expansion of prenatal care to low-income women.
