Day Three: Where's Governor Rell?

Governor Should Answer Questions, Return Contributions
December 15, 2005

New Haven----Saying “Governor Rell should stop stonewalling, show leadership, and take responsibility,” New Haven Mayor John DeStefano called on Governor Rell to hold a news conference on Friday to “publicly answer serious questions about her fundraising, order her commissioners and their deputies to fully cooperate with investigators, and give back improper or illegal campaign contributions.”

“Governor Rell’s continued failure to address serious questions about possible illegal fundraising on her behalf raises serious questions about what the governor knew and when did she know it. The Governor owes the public answers,” said DeStefano.

“Why is the governor refusing to disclose who attended her fundraiser, who contributed to her fundraiser, and why is the governor refusing to publicly order her employees to cooperate with investigators? This is a real lack of leadership,” said  DeStefano.

“As Lt. Governor, Jodi Rell said she did not know what was going on regarding Rowland’s wrongdoing. Well, as Governor, does Jodi Rell know what is going on in her own Administration?” asked DeStefano.

DeStefano also called on Governor Rell to give back campaign contributions received or solicited surrounding her December 7th fundraiser, now being investigated by the State Attorney’s Office and the State Elections Enforcement Commission.

“To help remove the ethical and legal cloud surrounding the December 7th fundraiser being investigated, the Governor should publicly commit to returning any campaign contributions received or solicited for that event,” said DeStefano.

DeStefano called this fundraising controversy part of a disturbing pattern.

“The Governor’s failure to take responsibility for unethical or illegal fundraising conducted on her behalf shows a disturbing pattern, where the Governor either does not know what is going on in her own Administration or chooses not to know what is going on. Either way, this does not show the leadership our state needs,” said DeStefano.
