New Haven—Former Congressman Sam Gejdenson topped a list of Eastern Connecticut leaders who today announced their support of New Haven Mayor John DeStefano’s campaign for Governor, stating that his leadership was critical to the long-term health of the region.

“Eastern Connecticut’s future depends on visionary new statewide leadership that can address critical educational and economic growth issues. I know that John DeStefano is the right man for the job—right for Eastern Connecticut, right for all of Connecticut, right because he is the candidate with the record of bringing people together to get things done,” said Gejdenson. Gejdenson served the people and communities of Eastern Connecticut in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1981 to 2000.

On Monday, 70 Southeastern Connecticut supporters rallied behind DeStefano at a New London fundraiser for his campaign, contributing money and signing up to host house meetings and volunteer. “Eastern Connecticut is incredibly important to our campaign and we are building a great team here,” said campaign spokeswoman Shonu Gandhi.

Gejdenson topped a list of other Eastern Connecticut leaders who have also committed to help elect DeStefano Governor—Mansfield Mayor Betsy Paterson, Norwich Democratic Town Chair Arthur Sharon, Norwich State Representative Jack Malone, New London State Representative Ernest Hewitt, State Representative Deborah Heinrich, former East Haddam First Selectwoman Sue Merrow and Former Marlborough First Selectman Howard Dean all announced their support for DeStefano today.

“We’re going to work hard and work together to elect John DeStefano Governor of Connecticut. The future of our region is at stake,” Gejdenson said.

“The Eastern part of our state has incredible potential and I am excited to work hard for the support of its residents over the next year,” DeStefano said. “I am honored by today’s endorsements and proud of the team we are building to move Connecticut forward.”

DeStefano has raised $2.7 million and been endorsed by 21 unions that represent 55,000 workers statewide.
