The West Wing Debate

Posted by Aldon Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 7:54pm.

Welcome to the DeStefano campaign’s Blog for Connecticut. Our goal is to have a fun community that discusses how we can help make Connecticut a better state. Getting Mayor DeStefano elected Governor is the key component. However, building community, having fun and discussing issues is an important way we will do this.

This evening, many of us will be watching the live debate on The West Wing. Whether you are from Connecticut or visiting us from around the country, please click on the comments, read what other people are saying, and add your own comments.

And heeeeeere we go! I'm so excited!

"Let's have a real debate!"

Posted by Aldon Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:06pm.

Let's hope the debate is better than the American Express ad.

Posted by Anonymous on November 6, 2005 - 8:09pm.

I dunno - I have a love of Ellen Degenerous - even though she's goofy.

Posted by Kim Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:10pm.

And Santos shines! I think he'll get the better of Vinnick.

Posted by Kim Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:12pm.

We don't have a foreign border in Connecticut, but we do have an imigration problem. Double the border patrol? Vote for Cafta? Issue ID cards? What should be done about imigration in Connecticut?

What do people think about Boughton versus Esposito in Danbury? Is Vinnick sounding like Boughton?

Posted by Anonymous on November 6, 2005 - 8:14pm.

Vinnick is too politically polished and can no longer speak to the common man.

Posted by Kim Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:15pm.

Santos is calling for a millionaires tax. Sounds familiar to those of us in Connecticut.

Posted by Anonymous on November 6, 2005 - 8:17pm.

Santos is doing great!

Posted by Kim Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:20pm.

Does this discussion about education funding sound familiar? We had a similar discussion on the blog a while ago.

Posted by Aldon Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:20pm.

Hmmmm - a bold move. Can Santos pull this off?

Posted by Kim Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:26pm.

Does anyone suppose this will change the nature of the Presidential debates in '08?

Posted by Kim Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:29pm.

Not likely. I wonder how many people are really watching.

Posted by Anonymous on November 6, 2005 - 8:32pm.

I suppose - but wouldn't it be great?

Posted by Kim Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:32pm.

but yes - lame Am Ex ad!

Posted by Kim Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:34pm.

Hello, everyone. Is everybody watching West Wing tonight? Should be an interesting mix of fiction/reality....what is real? This seems confusing. The debate seems real!

Wish more candidates would really debate without the rules...

Hi, folks. West Wing is not on yet on the West coast but I decided I would see what you all have to say. Details, please! They said each time zone will have a different live broadcast with the actors saying different things so please...transcribe as much as possible and I will do the same when it comes on here (if you all are still awake).

Hi, Aldon!

Posted by cHeRyL! on November 6, 2005 - 8:38pm.

I like the Medicare for all plan....that wouldn't be complicated. Defense of liberals. Yes! Why can't democrats say this?

Posted by Anonymous on November 6, 2005 - 8:40pm.

Posted by IndySteve on November 6, 2005 - 8:41pm.

So, if this will be live twice, will the 'candidates' have any energy left?

Posted by Anonymous on November 6, 2005 - 8:42pm.

Thanks guys!

Do you think the debate will degenerate into squabbling? I hope not. I would love to see some lessons taken from this.

Posted by Kim Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:43pm.

cHeRyL!, Santos is doing great - and Vinnick is being pretty slimey - old style politico. I don't know if I'll be up later because Fiona gets up early regardless of when I've stayed up until.

Do you think the Daily Show will comment on the West Wing tonight?

Posted by Kim Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:45pm.

cHeRyL!

Glad you stoppped by. I've been watching and not really transcribing.

They have abandoned the rules.

As an anonymous poster commented, there was a great defense of being a liberal by Santos.

Santos opposes the death penalty. Full Stop. Vinnick supports it. Full Stop.

They just hit on campaign finance issues and are moving onto ANWR drilling and energy independence.

Posted by Aldon Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:45pm.

A year's worth of oil sounds like a lot of oil to Vinnick, and no one ever goes there, so why not drill?

Posted by Anonymous on November 6, 2005 - 8:45pm.

So much of the job of President is scripted these days. Maybe these two ought to run.

Posted by IndySteve on November 6, 2005 - 8:46pm.

Vinnick is saying no one but the rich will ever go to Alaska anyway, and oil wells won't ruin it anyhow.

Posted by Kim Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:46pm.

This sounds fascinating! What an idea - saying what you believe and meaning it.

Posted by tc in San Diego on November 6, 2005 - 8:47pm.

Vinnick just said Nuclear Power is 'Completely Safe'

Posted by Anonymous on November 6, 2005 - 8:47pm.

I wonder what the west coast version of the debate will be like, what sort of energy they will have left. They do have a couple hours to recover.

Posted by Aldon Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:47pm.

Vinnick: The coolest thing you can drive now is a Hybrid. I guess Vinnick must think Mayor DeStefano is cool.

Posted by Anonymous on November 6, 2005 - 8:48pm.

How much will it cost us to get that year's worth of oil? Perhaps that millionaire's tax could be increased to create a fund for environmental cleanup.

Posted by Anonymous on November 6, 2005 - 8:48pm.

Vinnick is keeping to tradional Repub talking points - but Santos is the liberal candidate we all long for!

Vinnick is denying global warming! Can't wait for creationism . . .

Posted by Kim Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:48pm.

Santos: I will never go to war for oil. (Gets big applause)

Posted by Anonymous on November 6, 2005 - 8:49pm.

"I will never go to war for oil" - Santos

Posted by Kim Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:49pm.

Is Vinnick for drilling?

Posted by Anonymous on November 6, 2005 - 8:49pm.

If you believe nuclear power is completely safe, you still think Iraq had WMD.

Posted by tc in San Diego on November 6, 2005 - 8:49pm.

Vinnick denying anyone goes to war for oil.

Posted by Kim Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:49pm.

Wait - Vinnick already pledged to never raise Medicare taxes!

Posted by Kim Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:50pm.

Crushies for Santos!!!!

Posted by Kim Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:51pm.

Santos: The President has to lead. Nice talk about leadership. Here in Connecticut, who is a real leader? Rell? She simply reacts. DeStefano has vision and leadership. Santos for President, DeStefano for Governor.

Posted by Anonymous on November 6, 2005 - 8:52pm.

Has he ever heard of radioactive isotopes? Strontium-90? RI-131? Not to mention the opportunity for terrorists attacks. We have 3 reactors here, and the largest one in the nation also. That means the byproducts not only affect us, but all those downwind...which means anyone east of Phoenix.

Posted by Anonymous on November 6, 2005 - 8:53pm.

Did anyone else just get a little teary?

Posted by Kim Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:53pm.

Ha, Ha Kim. I will second that, Crushies for Santos!

He is pretty hot. Not just his politics, lol.

Posted by Anonymous on November 6, 2005 - 8:54pm.

This ought to be how debates are run. Much more informative...see how candidates handle surprises. Can the canned stump speeches!

Posted by IndySteve on November 6, 2005 - 8:55pm.

Closing statements: Santos goes first.

Vinnick: Do we want more government or to get control of government?

Posted by Aldon Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:55pm.

Ugh - Vinnick is doing a pretty closing, but I think Santos wiped the floor with him, mostly.

Posted by Kim Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:55pm.

Damn - I want media spin!!!!

Posted by Kim Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:56pm.

Hey, if Ronald Regan could do it, Santos can do it. We need him to run for governor here in California!! What a race that would be - Santos vs. Arnold!

Posted by tc in San Diego on November 6, 2005 - 8:56pm.

That is the debate. The moderator thanked everyone for watching. I want to thank everyone who stopped by. I hope this was fun. I hope everyone thinks a little bit about the issues we face. Hopefully some of you will come back more and talk about how we can help make Connecticut better.

Posted by Aldon Hynes on November 6, 2005 - 8:57pm.

I'm off to vote at nbc.com! Then off to put sleeping Fiona to bed . . .
