DeStefano promises health care will be a campaign issue

Forms health care team of national experts to address critical problems

New Haven---On Monday, October 24, New Haven Mayor John DeStefano, a Democratic candidate for Governor, announced that health care will be central to his 2006 gubernatorial platform and appointed Dr. K.J. Lee, senior health care advisor to Senators Kerry and Lieberman, as Chair and nationally renowned health care economist Professor Kenneth Thorpe, who served in the Clinton Administration, as Vice Chair to his Health Care Task Force.

“Our health care system is fragmented and involves tremendous inefficiencies and waste. This is crushing job growth in our state and weighing down our state budget. We need to aggressively reform our system by crafting a comprehensive plan that increases transparency, emphasizes preventive care, and creates an affordable, high quality solution for middle and working class families and small business by decreasing waste in administration,” DeStefano said.

Dr. K.J. Lee is a Harvard and Columbia University educated physician who has been practicing Ear, Nose and Throat surgery for 40 years. He is a prolific author and lectures widely on health policy. One of his text books is considered among the most widely read texts in the field. He has served has a senior health care advisor to Senators Lieberman and Kerry. “There are many who pay lip-service to reform the health care system. I’m supporting John DeStefano because I know he has the skills, ability and desire to fix the system. He has asked me to organize a coalition in order to make it happen,” Lee said.

Professor Kenneth E. Thorpe, Ph.D., is the Robert W. Woodruff Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Policy & Management, in the Rollins School of Public Health of Emory University. Recently, Professor Thorpe was Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health Policy in the Clinton Administration. In this capacity, he coordinated all financial estimates and program impacts of President Clinton's health care reform proposals for the White House. He also directed the administration's estimation efforts in dealing with Congressional health care reform proposals during the 103rd and 104th sessions of Congress. On the DeStefano for Governor Health Care Task Force, he will help craft a health plan that is affordable and will contribute to economic growth.
