First Of Ten Endorsements In Ten Weeks
Hartford—Saying that “John DeStefano has demonstrated the leadership, vision, and ideas to keep Connecticut families safe,” Connecticut’s largest police union, representing 4000 police officers from 60 communities, today endorsed New Haven Mayor John DeStefano for governor. Flanked by almost two dozen police officers, DeStefano received AFSCME Council 15’s endorsement at a press conference on the State Capitol steps. This is the earliest endorsement in recent history that the police officers organization has made in a statewide race.

The endorsement represents the first in a series of ten endorsements that the DeStefano campaign will announce over the next ten weeks, which reflects growing political and labor support for the New Haven mayor’s candidacy. At the press conference, Council 15 President Paul Ariola, Executive Director James Howell, and New Haven Local 530 President Louis Cavalier all spoke about why the police organization enthusiastically endorses DeStefano, focusing on DeStefano’s ability to address issues of public safety, homeland security and economic security for middle-class and working families.“We are here today to be a part of history—to endorse John DeStefano for governor because we believe he is going to make government work for the hardworking families of this state. With the safety of Connecticut families threatened by crime and terrorism, the issues facing are state and families are too serious to sit by and ignore,” Howell said.
“Under John DeStefano, crime has been drastically cut in New Haven. Neighborhoods have been revitalized. John DeStefano will be a governor who will make sure Connecticut is safe. That’s why 4000 police officers throughout Connecticut enthusiastically endorse John DeStefano for governor,” Ariola added.
DeStefano stressed that as governor he would look for ways to put more police on the street, particularly in cities such as Waterbury, Danbury, Bridgeport and Hartford which have fewer police officers today than they did in 2000, when the COPS program was defunded. “As Governor, I will work closely with other Governors to have COPS funding restored and ensure that we have the number of police we need to ensure public safety,” DeStefano said.
DeStefano pointed to his experience as President of the National League of Cities, where he worked closely with Mayors throughout the nation to lobby the federal government on increasing federal homeland security funding for cities and towns. “As Governor, I will work closely with area Governors to do the same—our nation can’t be safe unless our states are safe and I know how to build the coalitions necessary to make this happen,” DeStefano said.
“I am honored to have the support of the men and women on the frontlines of making Connecticut safe from domestic and terrorist threats. Our police officers know that Connecticut needs new leadership, and we are going to work together to make that happen,” DeStefano said.
