Pennies, nickels, and large checks

Posted by Lauren Gelmann on June 23, 2005 - 4:34pm.

Pennies, nickels, and large checks will all be accepted. In our sixteen months of raising money we have had thousands of supporters donate and thanks to a very hard working finance team that number grows everyday. Today we are launching a statewide challenge. In the next week we want to raise an additional $100,000 to meet our fundraising goal for the quarter! We are first in fundraising but we need your help to stay there. So stop reading this and click here. Thanks so much for all your support. We couldn’t do this without your help. Why are you still reading? Donate!

I don't have a lot of money, but if I did I would give it to Lauren Gelmann. I think she's fabulous as a person and as a finance director. Send money if you can! My best to the campaign!

Kudos to Lauren's leadership and her hard working team! Great job!!! Let's keep the donations coming so we can let all of Connecticut know why DeStefano should be our next governor!

I think it is an excellent blog...the best blog I have ever read!! And if I wasn't a poor broke college student I would give my money to Lauren Gelmann/Destefano. I hope others continue to donate!

$100,000 may seam like a lot of money, and boy is it. $100,000 will help push the campaign even further than it has already. It will put gas in the campaign car - yes the campaign has its own car, New Haven's residents aren't footing the bill for John driving all over the state - it will help keep this website online, and it will be spent developing the grassroot organization that will win this campaign.

$100,000 is a ton of money, but no one person will be giving it - and not just because its against campaign finance rules. This goal is going to be reached because that college kid who doesn't have a lot of money is going to contribute 10 bucks. But so is the 20 something whose been following the blog from his office computer. And then there are going to be women and men from Hartford, Bridgeport, Chester and Old Saybrook (and many other towns) who are going to give 20, 50 and sometimes even several hundred dollars to the campaign because they believe in John's message too.

There are tons of democrats in this state, tons of independents and probably even a few republicans in this state who have realized that John DeStefano is the way to a better Connecticut. A Connecticut where job growth and quality life are the focus. But it starts with all of us.

I don't work for the campaign. I just really believe that John DeStefano is the best chance Connecticut has for meeting and exceeding its potential.

There are a lot of us out here who feel their "small contribution" doesn't mean much, but if 100 people make $20 contributions the campaign will be $2000 better off, and if 500 people do then its 10,000. We can do this! Please help make Connecticut a place where hard work and intellegence does lead to greatness!

Admirable goal. But what is the goal for the quarter?

Posted by Anonymous on June 23, 2005 - 10:05pm.

I hate to break it to you, but money will only get DeStefano so far. At some point, people will (hopefully) realize that he is just your typical lying, corrupt, dirty politician disguised as your next door neighbor.

You know what I really hate? I hate assholes who leave really nasty messages on people's blogs. Not to mention that, they do it anonymously because they don't have the guts to put their name down. People who leave comments like the one above are just worthless human beings.

People who have beef with DeStefano are mostly the Coliseum freaks who run around trying to save the ugliest building New Haven has ever seen constructed on its grounds. It's a financial failure, it's the first building that welcomes people to New Haven on the highway and it makes New Havenites cringe and travelers laugh. It's the ugliest building I've ever seen, and it's falling apart.

I've settled in New Haven for more than two decades now, and I've seen the transformation. So don't run around calling DeStefano a corrupt lying politician because we here in New Haven have seen a lot of those and this guy certainly ain't one of them. DeStefano is a tough guy. He doesn't take bullshit from nobody and he'll make his voice heard. If you don't like him, if you don't like politicians with spines, then you're just so narrow-minded or indoctrinated by something that your logic is totally blurred by propaganda.

If you, anonymous, is a Coliseum freak, I can do nothing but feel sorry for you. If you are someone from another campaign trying to anonymously put him down, I feel sorry for your immature behavior too. This is a open forum, obviously, and I don't usually participate in writing things but if you want to put people down, I can certainly put you down too. People who leave comments like the one above have no character of their own, so they go around attacking other peoples' characters. Good job, God's proud of you. Keep on doing the good work and anonymously and unsubstantially putting others down.

Not a DeStefano campaign worker, just someone ticked off by people who have no spine.

What are the goals for the quarter? I’m a bad person to respond on this. I have a really different view of goals. Back when I was in college I had a philosophy professor who had led a group of students on a pilgrimage from Paris to Santiago. There was a cathedral every twenty miles which was about as far as a pilgrim could walk in a day. It was a moving experience and afterwards, he took the students to various alumni associations meetings. At one meeting an old alumni got up and shook his finger at a kid who had just spoken and said, “You know the problem with you? You don’t have any goals.”

The student responded, “No, I have one goal, to live each moment more fully and more lovingly than the previous.”

With that as prelude, let me talk a little bit about the goals for the quarter from my perspective. My goal here is to help make life better for people living in Connecticut. We will reach this goal by getting more people to understand why Mayor DeStefano is the best candidate to address the problems of our state. We will do this by getting people to become more involved in how their state is run, not only by donating whatever they can, whether it be $2,500 or $20, but by getting involved in the campaign and by getting involved in contacting their currently elected officials.

To be more specific, one of my goals for this quarter was to get Lauren to post and I’m really glad she did. She brings a great spirit and tremendous excitement to the campaign. She understands that the way we are going to win is by getting everyone, those who can afford to write big checks and those who have never contributed to a campaign and can only afford to send in ten or twenty bucks, to be part of the team.

So, while Lauren and others might have some specific dollar goal in mind, I don’t. My goal is for Mayor DeStefano to stay in first place in fundraising. My goal is for the campaign to bring new people into the campaign, people who haven’t been involved in state politics in the past and to get new people and old working together to help address the problems of our state by electing Mayor DeStefano Governor.

Jamal ... well said! Fundraising is one of the hardest things to do on a campaign and we all know you can't have a campaign if you don't have the cash to pay for it! Major kudos to everyone on the DeStefano finance staff ... your not that far away from raising more money than any other democrat candidate in CT's history!

DeStefano fundraising staff rocks. But Mayor DeStefano is the one that rocks the most! Let's go ahead and spend this money wisely because so many people are supporting us financially and putting their political trust in us! Go Mayor!

Congrats to the DeStefano team for the leading the race in fundraising! If you were in New Haven 10 years ago, you will know that, frankly, it wasn't a great city. Over course of DeStefano's administration (with the help of a few energetic Yalies), this city had a Renaissance. I'm not going to rattle of a list of statistics - the website has them if you want - but it is enough to say that New Haven is now a model All-American city. Now let's send our Renaissance man to Hartford!

I'm a Destefano supporter, not the guy who left the "nasty" message anonymously, but I'm compelled to defend anonymous posters, and point out the folly in attacking them.

I've posted on this blog with my name, a handle, and anonymously. The latter is sometimes a simple matter of forgetting. In all cases my anonymity remained firmly intact, and the content of my post remained unaltered whether any real or assumed name was attached.

For those who never knew or have forgotten, the web is necessarily anonymous. Jamalj183 means nothing except that your first name might be Jamal. Then again you may just be a Destefano staffer, which you somewhat suspiciously deny, hypocritically taking advantage of the intrinsic web anonymity you selectively decry.

In effect all handles are equally anonymous, and even full names used online are dubious. Anonymity is the double-edged sword of the Internet. It allows users to escape or change their identity, thus interacting free from social roles determined by gender, race, age, etc. For some this a great virtue, but anonymity is also highly exploitable allowing varying degrees of deception, the consequences of which I'm sure we're all aware of.

Attacking anonymity only reveals your own ignorance. Attack the content or lack thereof of a particular post, which you were right in doing, Jamal, but focus on conent. If you insist on attacking a post because it was done anonymously then please be consistent and also criticize anonymous posters that praise Destefano.

So-called spinelessness pisses you off. Reactionary types who don't think before they post piss me off. Until you post your full name, physical address, and phone number don’t call people spineless. That also goes for confirmed Destefano staffers who have launched similar anti-anonymity tirades on previous threads. Get a clue.

Good luck with fundraising.

I would like to point out that all of you can click on Click here to register to create a userid and help establish a sense of identity.

It is possible to hide behind pseudonyms and anonymity, but it is also possible to develop a meaningful voice and identity in the dialog. I hope that more of you will be willing to establish your own voice and identity here.

Frank, Lauren and I all have used our full names and can be contacted through the campaign office.
