Worth Fighting For

Posted by John DeStefano on June 21, 2005 - 11:19am.

I was speaking to a New Haven Police Officer this morning who was coming off her midnight shift. She was telling me that her son was graduating from 8th Grade this week and that he was headed for high school in the Fall. She went on to tell me that she was going to get her boy to the library today, as he had a summer reading list from his prospective high school and that he was going to get going on it NOW (her emphasis) and that she was going to work the extra time she needed to get him through school.

Two observations. First, what an amazing role parents play in motivating their kids. This single parent mom was making sure that her son had every chance and every opportunity to do well. Does our government do enough to support these parents? We make it harder from them at many turns.

Second, it is so important for our State University and Community College system to be accessible and relevant to the needs of Connecticut’s employers. This young man will leave high school and be competing with young people throughout the world for the jobs of the future. Are we doing everything we can to support him in the competition? We continue to increase his college tuition, pricing kids like him and their parents out of a college education. Once he is at college, does our system provide him with the cutting-edge training he needs to compete with the rest of the world for the jobs of the future? It seems to me that there is no more fundamental thing could State government be doing. It’s one of the main reasons I am running for Governor.

In a world that is increasingly small and where work can be done by anybody, from anyplace, at anytime –it is critical for Connecticut to invest in it’s young people and for those re-entering or re-training for work. To me, that’s something worth fighting for in Connecticut.

Mayor-

These are good questions, but where are the answers? Can you explain how you plan to change things to make government a more effective partner in education?

It seems like many Democrats think that listing CT's ailments will be enough to get them elected. At some point, people are going to ask for detailed plans of what you're going to do. What I'm saying is, I think we already know that "it is so important for our State University and Community College system to be accessible and relevant to the needs of Connecticut’s employers", so what will you do about it?

Thanks

Nutmegger06: Thanks for the question. Let me share two quick thoughts: 1. Government has a real role to play in ending workforce shortages. For example, precision manufacturers cite a major impediment to their ability to succeed in Connecticut to be a shortage of trade school and other graduates trained with the training necessary to operate precision manufacturing equipment. Aggressive management, careful planning and investments in additional program slots can solve these problems. 2. Affordability is an issue that really concerns me, and I am exploring a number of possible solutions. Simply stated, the cost of an undergraduate education in Connecticut has gone up significantly as the portions paid by the state and federal government have decreased significantly. Some thoughts: This a nationwide problem, and I would work closely with Governors throughout the country in lobbying the federal government to at least restore Pell grant funding. I did work very similar to this as President of the National League of Cities. We need to control costs, by examining our expenditures and investing in efficient management systems. And then we need to prioritize making college affordable for working families.

The mayor raises an important point (by the way, great commencement comments at SCSU this year!).

UCONN 2000 aside, the "also rans" of public higher education are the four CSU campuses. There is not much fat to cut, I'm afraid. I run a department that educates 3400 students a year on just $10,000 of operating expenses: everything from paper clips to air conditioners to photocopying. Two ideas for some savings do occur to me, however:
1. there is bloat at the CSU system office itself. When we can't hire enough faculty members to teach our over-flowing classes, why not consider consolidating the CSU system office with UCONN's since they presumably perform many of the same tasks?
2. there is evidence that some of the state's private vendors pad their bills in ways that are difficult to catch. The Southern News printed an article about one example I myself found in its May 11 edition (yes, I know that's your birthday because it's also mine).
