Here to stay.

In today's Hartford Courant, Lt. Governor Kevin Sullivan suggests that he may be running for Governor, resigning from his job at Trinity College.

The Courant reports: “What this means is I have an absolutely clear deck," Sullivan said Thursday of his ability to run for governor. "I am leaning very strongly in that direction."

But then Sullivan went on to say: "If Dick Blumenthal runs, that's going to define the race. Everyone goes away if it's Dick Blumenthal."

I won't. I’m in this for the people of Connecticut—because our families need a new direction. If you think someone else should be Governor, you shouldn’t run for Governor—it’s too important of a job. I’m in this race to stay and fight for Connecticut’s families because I believe I have the record and vision to get the job done. We build our statewide organization, recruit new supporters and raise money everyday. I’m not going anywhere.

I second that, Mayor.

Obviously, no Connecticut voter wants to elect someone who doesn't actually want the job. By now, we should be concentrating on ideas and records, not the speculation of whether someone will jump into the race or not.

Kevin Sullivan is running because he has nothing else to do. He has been Lieutenant Governor for a year now and no one knows he exists. He has been ineffective in criticizing Governor Rell. Anyone who will "drop out" when Blumenthal jumps in doesn't deserve to have his name on the ballot period.

We need someone that wants the job. We need someone who has the right vision and the right priorities for Connecticut, not just their own political ambitions.

That goes for you too, Mr. Blumenthal. Everyone knows you don't want the job and that the job you really want is Lieberman's. If you don't have the guts to run against him in the primary you shouldn't "settle" for the governorship because you didn't get "anointed" to become a US Senator.

Connecticut deserves better than just 2 opportunistic politicians who don't have the right priorities in mind.

Although I agree with some of what you say Express, I think that you make far too many assumptions. First off, Blumenthal isn't even running yet, if he ever will at all. In recent weeks, increasing speculation has been raised as to whether he will even run at all. One thing is for certain: Dick Blumenthal will probably not run unless he is positive he can win. However, there is another point I would like to bring up. It's worth mentioning that Dick Blumenthal has done a fine job as AG. He has carried out his tasks responsibly and effectively, and his recent declaration of his intent to sue the federal governmnet for the unfunded mandates in the "No Child Left Behind" program is right on the money. The only problem with Blumenthal is that he is TOO much of a politician: rather than running out of a true desire to help the state, he would run (or so we assume) to add the job to his resume on his way to what he considers to be "bigger and better" things. IF he runs for these reasons, I believe that is wrong. However, Express, we should cross that bridge when we come to it. In the meanwhile, the AG is a fellow Democrat, and one actively representing the liberal interests in the state that put him there.

One thing I’ve noticed in recent years is that Americans (and now, especially citizens of Connecticut) have become even more distrustful of politicians than they used to be. This distrust is well founded, and was shared by our founding fathers. The whole purpose of term limits was an attempt to keep “career politicians” from representing average citizens. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with making a career out of politics if you do it the right way.

My point is that politicians are symbols as well as policy makers, for good or ill. We’ve seen that having the best ideas and policies isn’t the only major factor in winning an election. This could be viewed as a result of the increasing shallowness and ignorance of Americans, but it’s too easy to be that cynical, especially in a state like ours that is so well educated. Maybe we’re finally seeing the beginning of the end for candidates who are in it for their own political ambitions.I applaud John DeStefano for making this distinction as I think it is increasingly being looked for by the average voter.

More and more in this country, people already in high places feel that they are owed the next step, almost as an inheritance. We can and should learn a great deal from the last Presidential election. Polls have shown that the average Bush voter didn’t even agree with most of his views, but somehow people thought he was the right man for the job. The recent dip in his job approval ratings also backs this up. They were able to hammer Kerry for voting for the Iraq war which he later criticized, making him look like the typical opportunistic politician who would sell out his soul for a few votes.

Across the country we’ve seen an “anti-career politician” trend; Jesse Ventura in Minnesota, Arnold in California. People voted for these candidates because they knew they didn’t need to run for their own financial gain or career advancement. A politician’s motive for running has become a big issue in the minds of voters that is seldom talked about. Mayor DeStefano needs to continue to be outspoken about his motives.

People in this state especially are ready for a different type of governor. The Roland scandal has paved the way for a truly progressive candidate and now is the time to capitalize on this healthy yearning for a real evolution of Connecticut’s political landscape.

Supporters of progressive politics in Connecticut aren’t going anywhere either.

A good point, abriggs, but we also have to realize that the nature of our current system makes career politics nearly a neccesity. Even the most trivial political position has evolved into a full-time struggle for money and popularity, whether the candidate desires higher office or not. Even Mayor DeStefano cannot help but make a career out of politics; he has served 6 terms (12 years, New Haven has two-year cycles) as Mayor. What truly sets DeStefano apart from other candidates are his motivations for running for Governor. While OTHER (potential) candidates may seek the office for the purposes of future advancement, the Mayor wants the job so he can better the lives of our fellow residents of our beautiful state. It is his vision that makes him the candidate he is; he sees the potential this state has, and he believes that he can help us to unlock it to become the national leader we should be. As for the rising unpopularity of career politicians, Arnold was elected Governor of California because the citizenry had just removed Grey Davis, and in those kinds of situations an "outside" - that is, non-political - candidate becomes a likely choice. However, as California (and Arnold) are discovering now, those selections rarely work out in the long term. As of late, all Arnold can say for himself is that he is more popular than the CA legislature. However, this doesn't say much - the legislature has about a 20% approval rating in that state, and Arnold's has been placed around 40%. Today, he was booed off the stage at a function he was speaking at. As with most "outside" candidates, Arnold's short honeymoon appears to be over.
