Yesterday, the Connecticut Local Politics Blog posted its review of 2006 Gubernatorial campaign websites. This site got good reviews as well as a few suggestions for improvement. I would like to take a few moments to address some of this.

We were criticized for not having a search box up, a valid and important criticism. We should have had a search box up from the beginning and I should have noticed we didn’t. The software that we use has built in search capabilities which weren’t being utilized. I have added a search box on the right. This is a dynamic and flexible site and other suggestions on improving the usability of the site are greatly appreciated.

We were criticized for not having our Spanish content up. This has been a source of frustration for me and others at the campaign. I hope that we can get this fixed soon. Many sites that have Spanish have the simple static pages up without any dynamic content. I would love it if we could find a volunteer to translate blog posts to Spanish and engage in discussions in Spanish comments.

Another criticism was that Mayor DeStefano doesn’t comment here often enough. This is another frustration several of us have been working on. Our current goal is to get him to post at least once a week. Over the past month he’s written two posts that have gotten lost when he tried to post them and one week, he was going to post but spent most of his writing time writing eulogies. I don’t make any promises, but I sure hope that this will be addressed very soon as well.

At the end of the review, Genghis writes, “This is a fun and informative site, and by far the best of the three at this time. Will it help DeStefano in the long run?” I am glad that this site is considered the best of the three right now. I do hope that we have set a new standard for campaign websites in Connecticut and that the other campaigns will catch up and keep us on our toes. There are so many more things we can be doing with the site.

As to the question of whether this will help the mayor in the long run, I hope and believe it will. I hope that people wanting information will be able to get information from this site and see why we believe that Mayor DeStefano is the best candidate. I hope that this site will build a sense of community and excitement around the campaign so that we can get more people to go out face to face and talk about why Mayor DeStefano is the best candidate. I hope that the site will draw in people that haven’t been involved in politics and raise them to a new level of political involvement.

Down the road, I hope that what we learn from campaign websites can be used to help make the government more effective and responsive.

So, those are my thoughts for now. I look forward to other thoughts and comments about how we can improve the website and how we can get more people actively involved in state politics.
