Singin' The Traffic Blues

Posted by Frank Chi on June 14, 2005 - 2:16pm.

I feel incredibly compelled to write about traffic today. I wanted to come into the office by 9:30 this morning, after I drop off a friend at the Bridgeport Ferry. Driving from New Haven to Bridgeport is supposed to take around 30 minutes. Today, it took me well over an hour just to get there. Not only did I get in late, but my friend missed her ferry, pushing everyone's schedule back an hour.

Now, I have to say that I am extremely fortunate that I don’t need to take this route every day. The ones I truly feel sorry for are the Connecticut commuters who are required to sit in traffic every morning because I-95 is often seen as the only option to travel between New York and Connecticut. As a result, traffic congestion on I-95 gets worse by the year while no viable alternatives are being adopted by commuters.

We need to offer Connecticut commuters a better alternative. We need to increase the popularity of commuter rails by strengthening and adding commuter lines. For example, Mayor DeStefano has consistently called for strengthening our current commuter system while adding a line that spans from New Haven to Springfield, MA connecting New Haven and Hartford to Bradley International and offering drivers a more practical alternative to driving.

We also need to consider constructing ferry stations in cities such as New Haven and Stamford so we don't subjugate those who cross the Long Island Sound to New London and Bridgeport.

A problem on I-95 (or any Connecticut highway) is a problem for all of us. What do you guys think are the biggest transportation problems we face in Connecticut? How would you go about fixing them so that people don't sit miffed in their cars on our busiet highways?

That line from New Haven to Springfield is in the works, although it's moving slowly. New stations in New Haven, Hamden, Newington and Enfield are planned (hopefully). A lot of it depends on federal transportation money that just isn't forthcoming, though. Unfortunately, public transportation within cities like Hartford is such a wreck that commuting by train then taking a bus to one's workplace can be a nightmare.

This is a great topic, and one that I must deal with every day also. To drive from Avon, my home just West of Hartford, to New Haven, my commute every day, takes me an average of an hour and fifteen minutes, although it should take only forty minutes. Most of my time is consumed by sitting stationary, or nearly so, on I-91. Just now, before I walked in the door, the same drive took me nearly 2 hours. To say I'm frustrated would be an understatement. A system for CT commuters is a MUST, and must be implemented as soon as possible. Simply having no policy regarding what is quite possibly the state's worst problem can no longer be sufficient. It's time for a change.

Steve--

I didn't know the I-91 traffic was that fierce, and I'd be interested to hear just where things get backed up so badly in the morning. (at the I-95 junction??)

With regards to I-95, the state really out to be taking drastic action to address an out of control problem.

I'd recommend tolls with variable pricing depending upon the number of cars on the road. Frankly, if capacity is maxed out at a given time, it should become reasonably expensive for solo drivers to clog our highway lanes. (less expense for double occupancy, and free for three or more carpoolers.)

In addition, public transportation should be made cheaper, not more expensive as Rell is doing. When I travel into New York with friends, we often drive, for the simple reason that it costs $20 instead of $40, $60, or $80. It shouldn't be like that. Train fares should be truly nominal, not more expensive than driving or flying. Amtrak is a disgrace.

For the record, it sounds as if several of you are doing long solo commutes. Have you check out this CT carpooling site??

Steve -
You might want to try the Merritt Parkway. I believe it starts out as the Wilbur Cross Parkway up near you area. I'm not exactly sure where to pick it up in relation to where you're coming from, but you can mapquest it. It might be worth checking out.

Well, you are partially right. However, before it turns into the Wilbur Cross Parkway, it is the Berlin Turnpike up near me, where Route 5 and Route 15 are the same. Once they split, it becomes the Wilbur Cross, then the Merritt. At any rate, this route is even longer (if that is even possible.) The Berlin Turnpike portion, which I can access off of I-91 or Route 9, has stoplights every 100 yards or so. After that, it remains as a two-lane road that gets backed up, at times, even worse than the major interstates do. For example, for the forum in Wilton, which was on a weekend, I experienced traffic problems. The bottom line? I'm doomed to sit in traffic until CT does something about its transportation problems.

I would personally love to commute with someone - if anyone drives from Newtown to New Haven and works from 8:30 to 6, 7, 8, 9 and sometimes later with no real set work schedule let me know!! While it would be great to car pool - and when we go to events around the state we do - its difficult with our hectic schedules. Public transportation would be great - its not available to many of us. (I live in Newtown w/ my dad - I'm saving money for my own place - so the commute is the best bet).

Rick Elser (the Republican who ran against Rosa Delauro in 02 and 04) had a great idea about transportation. He stressed using the rail lines in CT to haul more freight. While it probably wouldn't make a huge difference in the long run, it would take some of the big 18 wheelers off of I-95.
