Why I am here

Posted by Aldon Hynes on June 8, 2005 - 7:24pm.

There are times that I look at the blank page and I wonder, what am I going to say; why am I doing this? I go to the website and start deleting spam comments offering suggestions at for the best online casinos and I think about my days as a Wall Street IT executive and wonder what has happened.

I started programming computers in the late sixties and first got on the internet in the early eighties. I became fascinated with how the internet could be used to help build a better world. I participated in all kinds of email lists, forums, any sort of online community I could connect with. For me, they were fun, I met a lot of interesting people, but it wasn’t fulfilling.

In 2003, I became involved in online political communities. Some of them were very meaningful. Others seemed to treat the internet as just another broadcast mechanism. I believe that the internet has a great ability to transform politics, by getting more people involved in a discussion, yet I realize that some websites end up just being the same old divisive rhetoric.

For the internet to be able to transform politics, we need leaders that are transformative leaders. James MacGregor Burns has written extensively about his idea of a transformative leader. Transformative leaders motivate their supporters to new levels of involvement by communicating a compelling vision. Transformative leaders expect more of themselves and of their supporters.

I believe that John DeStefano has that vision and that goal. I believe that he wants to draw all of us into a respectful, well thought out discussion about what will make Connecticut better. It is my hope that I can help build an online community where some of this discussion will take place and then spill over into face to face discussions at house meetings and other events around the state and I believe that if Mayor DeStefano gets elected Governor, that discussion will take hold and grow.

So, I return to the blank screen, I return to comments on the blog that aren’t helping move forward all of us coming together in a respectful, well thought out discussion. It is hard work, it can be frustrating at times, but I believe it is our best hope in getting everyone to work together to build a better state.

Comments

All anyone does on this blog is talk about the problems of CT and how we have to "expect more" of our leaders. "I met DeStefano when I was five years old, it is so amazing what he has done blah blah." How about some solutions? If DeStefano is such a progressive, innovative guy, I would like to hear how he plans to fix the state.

Keith, we talk about policy issues all the time. Please take the time to scroll through the pages upon pages on Blog for Connecticut. Recently, we've talked about the property tax, college tuition, and many other issues that Connecticut voters care most about. But at the same time, blogs aren't just supposed to be about policy and whatnot, blogs are interactive and personal and our stories and visions for Connecticut are just as pertinent as any policy post. This blog is diverse and rich in topic, so please, just because we've been starting a "Why I Am Here" series for some of our most avid bloggers doesn't mean that we talk about nothing.

Posted by Frank Chi on June 9, 2005 - 1:43am.

I have to side with Keith on this one. Policy issues are broached on occasion, however, it is usually reactive in nature, lacking in that forward looking progressive vision that many would like to see. Any relevant discussion is short lived and either dies too quickly or devolves into fawning praise for the mayor, and ill conceived attempts to tie personal expereicne into what should be a vibrant discussion, debate even, where people might actually disagree. Personalizing issues too soon, and too often seems to stunt serious discussion.

Think about it, once a blogger writes about his grade school association with Destefano what is left to say except, "that's a cute, sweet little post" or "I agree, the mayor is great." Please put a stop to this. It is off putting to say the least. Some bloggers are more guilty of this than others.

Frank, scroll through the pages upon pages of blogs yourself. Read it and see how hollow much of it is. It is riddled with innacuracy, underconsidered opinion, and self-indulgent tripe.

That may sound harsh, perhaps it was too harsh, but please remember that some criticism is aimed at making this blog a better functioning community with a freer flow of substantial thoughts and ideas. So don't write this off and resume spouting on about what the mayor means to you personally or what you "believe" the mayor can do given the chance. Do that if you must, but do more. Where's the beef? Change has happened in New Haven. Tell us aout that. Tell us about the mayor's role in that change. Tell us about his initiatives and contrast it with stagnation at the state level.

But don't focus exclusively on the past. In additon to telling us about the last four years in New Haven, tell us about the next four years in Connecticut, when Destefano is in Hartford where we all want him to be.

I think the point from where your problem arises, Mr. Anonymous, is your misunderstanding of our purpose here. It is not merely to provide our readership with a news source. Instead, it is our home on the web where we can talk about various topics, including, but not solely, policies, state news, and other topics. However, its more than that. Here on the campaign, we are more of a family than a bunch of co-workers, and each of us gets up in the morning and drags their sleep-deprived carcasses into the office for their own, personal reason. In some way, the Mayor has inspired each of us to commit ourselves to helping him win the governorship. For each of us here, that reason is different, and very personal. This is just one small place where we like to share with all of you, our fellow voters, what the mayor and his vision means to us. I live in Avon, near Hartford. On some days, like today, it takes me nearly two hours to get to the office. I also have a second job working at Panera Bread in Canton, which I go to once I leave here at 5 and work at until 12 or later. Then, I get up at 7:00 the next morning and make the drive out to New Haven again. The point is, Mayor DeStefano's vision for what Connecticut could be means alot to me, and it has inspired me. When I write a blog post for this website, I like to try to convey these strong feelings I have to the readers, to show everyone how important this election is to me and how important it should be to every Democratic voter. Frank is not just my co-worker, but my friend, just like everyone else here in the office. We are a team: a collection of folks working together to obtain a common goal: to get the man who represents our political views and a positive image for Connecticut into office. Call it self-indulgent if you want, but its one of the main reasons why I come down here every day.

Anonymous, "harsh critique" should always bear the critic's name at the end. Where's yours?

I disagree with your claim that our blog is hollow and inaccurate. When are we inaccurate? When are we hollow? Give us some examples. This blog is a place for people to talk about issues that many Connecticut Democrats don't have a chance to discuss online, and we do that. 90% of these blog posts are about policy issues concerning the state and how Mayor DeStefano has the best ideas to lead the state forward.

Honestly, if you have a problem with our "Why I Am Here" installments, then you are just asking for this blog to be boring. If you think it's corny that I've had the Mayor engrained in my mind as one who embodies New Haven's success, I respect your opinion. But that IS the reason why I'm working for John DeStefano, and not Dan Malloy, not Susan Bysiewicz and certainly not Jodi Rell. If you have a gripe against how my own political experiences have shaped my ideology and the leaders that have helped do so, then that is nothing but petty critique for why politics matters. We all have a reason to be where we are. I am working for John DeStefano because of his leadership in New Haven and I lived and breathed it as a child growing up here. I won't hesitate to say that over and over again.

Why don't you take some time to scroll down and read some of the most recent blog posts. They've been about alternative energy, Connecticut's skyrocketing college tuition, Rell's public finance proposal, and our need for property tax reform. We spend a lot of time on these posts, laboring over accurate figures and doing our best to voice our opinions in this public forum. Not to mention that, we put our names next to our writing.

Keith & The Typist w/no name...

Part of the beauty of the BLog is that YOU can decide what we are talking about. Your posts have led to a discussion about what is on the BLog and what is not on the Blog.

Instead, ask the BLog what DeStefano's vision for transportation is.

Frank and Steve will come back to you with what the Mayor talks about all the time in his stump speeches:

Connecticut is struggling to grow jobs because the transportation infrustructure for this state is obsolete.

In order to create jobs and maintain our own QUALITY of LIFE there must be a real investment. The $s that Rell has set aside for transportation is nearly the same amount that New Haven spends on renovating its school system.

An investment of TENS of BILLIONS of dollars must be made. Light transportation rail investments should not be limited to just NY to New Haven, but to New London and beyond. Similar lines should run from New Haven, up 91 to Springfield, MA. 84 has exploded in popularity over the past two decades and unless rail is put along that line we will see the second coming of I-95.

Bradley Airport should be connected to Hartford by an alternative transportation system to create greater growth opportunities for Hartford and all of Connecticut.

But Frank and Steve will also take their own experiences and so will other BLogers. You'll here about how everyday I drive to Milford to go to work and EVERY day there is the electronic sign that says 20 mile delays - 25 mile delays or like Monday, I-95 closed. Without other options besides highways our state is going to choke to death as it has been for a generation.

You'll here about policy but you'll also have to hear about experiences. Please don't be turned off by them, skip reading them if you'd like but those experiences help shape policy just as much as anything. Policies are reactions to the people's need and preperation for people's eventually needs. Without input, the system goes nowhere.

Oh, and please don't just ask about transportation....ask about what matters to YOU. For truely YOU can ask the question that changes Connecticut for the better!

I will try to answer a lot of these comments. First - I hope you all agree that we have an extremely passionate - motivated bunch of interns – we are really lucky to have them with us this summer.

First, I’m glad to see that a lot of passionate people also read the blog. We love to know what you think!

We try to keep this blog as more of an online community – not just a place for us to recite policy statements, or the mayors stump speech as so eloquently stated previously. Infact, we are often concerned that we talk too much about policy - but we like to hear what you think and if thats what you like - we'll keep that in mind.

As you may note I just did a recap of the Campaign finance proposals and the failure to reach consensus in the legislature last night. This blog is an opportunity for readers to participate in the dialogue. The staff – like John DeStefano value the opinions of the voters of Connecticut.

We’ve designed the blog to be responsive – we respond to current events, current topics and if there is a specific topic you would like debated on the blog feel free to make recommendations.

What else would you like to talk about??

Thanks Anonymous for your comments. One of the major goals of the blog is for people like you to make your voice heard and discuss the issues that matter to you. The blog, as you may have noticed, is constantly evolving, developing, growing and changing and we welcome your suggestions and thoughts. We prioritize accuracy and research our facts and figures carefully, and usually link to sources.

Heated words today. Destefano bloggers, we know you are working hard, but don't get so upset. For all you know those are just interns from another campaign or a Republican trying to make you lose your cool.

Just keep your chin up and watch your tempers. It's one thing for someone reading the blog to be turned off by a particular post, but it's another to be turned off from the campaign altogether. Be careful and diplomatic, and remeber you represent Destefano, not just yourselves.
