House Meetings: Just Do It!

Posted by Kelly Monaghan on June 3, 2005 - 5:22pm.

I hosted a house meeting for John DeStefano and, by golly, I feel pretty darned good about it.

If that seems sappy, then so be it. But I wanted to say it, because my guess is a lot of people who visit this blog feel like I felt before I held the house meeting.

I was worried that no one would show up; about fourteen did. I was worried that it would be a hassle; it was easy! I was worried I'd take flak from people I asked to come; they were delighted! I was worried it would be just another boring political speech; it proved to be fascinating, with a lot of honest give and take and plenty of questions asked. I learned a lot about my friends and neighbors (some of whom I'd never really met before) and everyone seemed to have a great time. In fact, the last guests left at 11!

I also felt good for having done it, which I think surprised me a bit. I felt like I'd done something small but important for my community, my state, and for the democratic process itself.

So the main reason for this post is to say to those of you who maybe have thought of holding a house party, but have hesitated -- and to those who have never even thought about it yet -- JUST DO IT! You'll be glad you did.

Kelly,

Your "house event" was a DEFINITE success!!!! We heard about why Mr. Destefano wants to run for Govenor, why he believes he's qualified, as well as his passion for the City of New Haven and potential plans for the State. In addition, your guests were very vocal regarding what they feel are necessary skills and potential accomplishments for a potential Govenor.

Good job!!!! I enjoyed the evening, and encourage others to host similer events.

Best, G.
