Honoring Our Veterans

Posted by Frank Chi on May 30, 2005 - 8:01pm.

I sure picked the wrong day to overdress. Unsure about attire, I stuffed myself in a suit and tie, arriving at East Rock Park on the most beautiful Memorial Day in recent memory. Today, Mayor DeStefano hosted the dedication for the restoration of the Sailors’ and Soldiers’ Monument, New Haven’s highest point and landmark war memorial perched atop East Rock’s summit.

At about 11:15 AM, the mayor arrived in slacks and a casual button-down shirt, dressing a little more in tune with today’s weather than me. Assuming the podium before television cameras and onlookers, the mayor did what he does best. With no speech in hand, he paid tribute to our fallen heroes in his classic sincere and precise way. Surrounded by those who initiated the monument restoration project, the mayor remarked on keeping faith with our veterans as well as those memorials we dedicate to honor them.

The Soldiers’ and Sailor’s Monument really does need some restoration. Erected in 1887, Connecticut’s most visible war monument has not been renovated in its 118-year history. Years of corrosion have cloaked the bronzework with green copper sulfate. The 5 statues and 4 reliefs have been covered with a century’s worth of pollution. Even those New Haven soldiers whose names adorn the memorial have been unrecognizable in recent years.

Choosing Memorial Day to mark the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument restoration was truly a unique way of honoring those who have fallen in service to our country. As New Haven begins the restoration of its landmark war memorial, we here at the DeStefano campaign salute our veterans and those who have sacrificed for our freedom and democratic sanctity. On this day, please remember those American soldiers who have fallen in our previous struggles and those currently serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world.
