Lets not lose this too....

Posted by Becky on May 26, 2005 - 1:27pm.

In the mayor’s speech he often asks people what is the one thing that Connecticut residents to expect to be excellent in.  It’s amazing how often the first answer is – UConn Basketball.  Its true – people in this state have become entirely complacent – we have truly become the land of steady habits – UConn basketball is the only thing we are truly passionate about.

As a UConn graduate – the daughter of a UConn alumni, niece of several UConn alumni and granddaughter of a UConn alumni I’m sensitive to the ups and downs of the basketball season and know March madness ends when the Huskies are out – UConn Basketball is Conneticut.

If our complacency wasn’t bad enough already Jodi Rell is out to ruin this too.  Today the New Haven Register published a story about the pending ethics review of outside contracts for “celebrity” employees – including Jim Calhoun and Geno Auriemma.  These coaches, like many around the nation have outside contracts – or endorsement deals – with companies such as Nike.  These contracts have existed for years and have followed the rules and guidelines set forth by the state, the executive and the NCAA – whose rules and bilaws are extremely rigid.

Sure ethics is an issue in this state but I don’t see how Jim Calhoun only wearing a Nike shirt and shoes hurts anyone.  In fact – the money that Calhoun has earned has no doubt allowed his continued generosity to the state including the donation of the Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center at the UConn Health Care Center.

There are bigger problems in the state – the governor is complacent about job growth – loosing 33,000 jobs since the end of the recession, complacent about transportation settling for a transportation policy that won’t even meet current needs for four years.  We should expect more – what will you do to make sure we don’t loose anything else in this state.

I agree with Becky. Instead of trying to confront some of the superficial problems in Connecticut, Jodi Rell should be more responsible in tackling the substantial problems. Her whole administration has been about image - she loves to propose change but never really does much more, she feeds off her "grandmother" image simply because Connecticut is so desperate to see corruption out of our politics. Complacency isn't corruption, no. But what our state needs is real leadership and real change. We simply can't just "settle" for complacency because John Rowland left a bad taste in our mouth, we need to address the key issues substantially in our state such as jobs, healthcare and education.

Jodi is doing what she always does, proposing a superficial change that will do nothing but hurt the state.

We all know that UConn basketball is important to the state's image, but it has real value too. Check out UConn since 1999 when UConn won its first national championship in men's basketball. SAT scores are up, more and more of COnnecticut's best students are chosing to remain instate and students from out of state are applying in droves.

We all know that we aren't going to pay Jim or Geno their existing salaries plus endorsements and even if we did, I'm not sure they would stay. Both have made UConn great and thus made the state a better place to live. We cannot afford to lose them.

I understand why this proposal makes sense on the surface but lets be responsible here and look to see what the overall impact truly would be...a Connecticut weakened even more than it already is.

I have mixed feelings about this. I'm not a big basketball fan or a big fan of Nike. However, it does seem like Rell is continuing to demonstrate misplaced priorities.

As she focuses on whether or not Nike can advertise through UConn coaches, where is she with the possible complaint about her ethics counsel?

She is all concerned about whether or not Nike can promote fitness through advertising on UConn coaches, but she is threatening a veto on legislation that would restrict the sale of junk food in public schools.

(Ref: Hartford Courant)

"The state Senate gave final approval Wednesday to ground-breaking legislation restricting the sale of junk food in public schools, but Gov. M. Jodi Rell hinted that she was weighing a veto."

Though I agree that these so-called celebrity state employees should have special status and be allowed to have outside contracts, I find the one particularly with Nike appalling. First of all, it is not just the coaches, but they are also contracting for and taking advantage of the student-athletes, as they are also forced to promote the products on their apparel. Here's an even bigger issue for me though - the Nike sweat shops and the fact that most, if not, all products are produced outside fo the US. UCONN and the state have no say over this. Don't like that example, try this one - Camel cigarettes offers Calhoun $10million to outfit his kids in Joe Camel brand sports equipment. Neither the student-athletes, nor the state would have anything to say about that.

If they want these outside contracts, they should have NOTHING to do with the student-athletes. Also, there should be some strict guidelines as to with which companies a coach could enter into endorsement deals.

Speaking of bicycles, Rell is way off base in threatening to veto the healthy kids legislation. She woul be nuts to veto it, but then again, it would just prove that, like Rowland, she is for sale. Except her masters are Coke and Pepsi and their lobbyists.

Ben:

Correlation does not imply causality. Yes, UConn's SAT scores are going up, as are number of (in and out of)state applicants.

However, study after study have shown that national championships do not measurably improve the academic quality of the school. This holds for both NCAA basketball and NCAA football.

Typically, the number of applicants goes up. However, they tend to be marginally qualified, or worse. Donations do go up, but to the athletic booster club, but they are wholly seperated from the university and don't share their wealth with the university.

-- general comments on article --

As for basketball and football coaches being "forced to curtail (almost to the point of elimination) these charitable works", thats a load of crap. They might choose to curtail their activities, and I woundn't blame them. But, don't confuse choosing to do something with being forced to. Auriemma does hit the nail on the head though -- the endorsement package is a significant part of football and basketball coaches' compensation, and eliminating that does one of two things: (a) forces the institution to pay the coach more to make up for lost endorsement revenue, or (b) pass up on the best coaches, who can command such lofty salaries.

So, if CT goes through with these proposals, it will certainly pay for them, either by spending more money or by having less qualified coaches.

A "possible complaint??" WOW!! What a spinner!!

'Aldonza'.. I try to use proper terms to describe the issues (and my real name). As of the publication of the article, it was not clear if an official complaint had been filed. Did you read the article? I highly recommend it. Do you have anything useful to say about it?

Do you believe it is appropriate for Rell's ethics counsel to also serve as "director for ethics and regulatory affairs for UConn's athletic department", or do you believe that this presents a conflict of interest?

Let's try to have an intelligent discussion about what ails this state.
