Hartford—Today at 4:30 p.m on the north steps of the capitol, Mayor John DeStefano, a Democratic candidate for Governor, will join the working men and women of Local 743, the machinists union, Senate President Don Williams and Connecticut AFL-CIO President John Olsen in demanding that Governor Jodi Rell take action to stop Connecticut’s steady bleeding of manufacturing jobs. The leadership of Local 743 has tried to meet with Rell since November over their concerns about both union and non-union job losses in the manufacturing sector, but she has refused to talk with them.

Connecticut has lost 39,000 jobs since 2001. UTC just announced that its Farmington facility will be losing 400 jobs. Hartford is facing the loss of 590 jobs, including more than 100 to be transferred out of state, in MetLife's proposed acquisition of Travelers Life Annuity. The recent devastating news about the Groton Sub Base has drawn more attention in recent days to Connecticut’s economy.

"Connecticut is the only state in the country that taxes manufacturing equipment as personal property making us increasingly uncompetitive for manufacturers. This Governor is unwilling to expend the political capital necessary to solve this problem and grow jobs in Connecticut. Our families deserve better—they need better," DeStefano said.
