Calling It Like It Is

Posted by Shonu Gandhi on May 17, 2005 - 12:06pm.

Today, http://connecticutlocalpolitics.blogspot.com has a post asking whether the Mayor went too far in criticizing Governor Rell for not doing enough to save the Groton sub-base. Check it out and comment!

Politicians need to tell the truth. And I am glad Mayor DeStefano did, whether or not other Democrats joined him.

Do you know what that refusal to tell the truth does?

It creates a lukewarm, mushy policy debate where no one is ever willing to stand for anything. And that hurts our families every day.

A critical component of any Governor's job is to lobby the federal government on behalf of her state. This Republican Governor refused to travel to Washington DC until just a couple of weeks ago, failing the 3.2 million of Connecticut miserably in that responsibility.

Now we are faced with yet another economic development failure to react to. We are always reacting--to the loss of 30,000 jobs since the end of the recession in 2001, to the loss of hundreds of MetLife jobs in Hartford, and now to this.

Worst of all, our Governor has no plan to create new jobs. New Jersey's base closure will result in the loss of over 5,000 jobs and hurt as well--but because New Jersey has gained 70,000 jobs in the same time we have lost 30,000 it will hurt far less.

I work for Mayor DeStefano precisely because he will call it like he sees it, creating a framework for the kind of debate Connecticut's families deserve.

Comments

I have to hand it to you, this campaign is the boldest thing I've seen around this state in a long time. I'm still not quite convinced that this was the right time, but I admire the mayor's willingness to speak his mind. Kudos!

It's a valid question and one that Democrats have to ask ourselves. Do we really think that holding a press conference with Gov. Rell and ignoring her lack of leadership is really going to help us win the governor's office? Of course it's not! I'm glad to see that AT LEAST one candidate has a backbone.

There may be criticism for it now, but you wait and see... the other candidates will jump on the band wagon.

Democrats need to point out that the reasons these base closings hurt so much is because they are no other options precisely because of the Rowland/Rell approach to economic development. And because folks like Nancy Johnson and Rob Simmons are up there everyday voting for an agenda that prioritizes returns to investment capital over job creation and economic security.

The notion that Connecticut Democrats have leverage over people like presidential advisor Karl Rove or Rep. Dick Hastert is laughable. Let's get politicians that care more about working families than about being at mushy press conferences. DeStefano is correct to point out the lack of leadership from Rell.

Mayor John is wrong.

Republican President Dwight Eisenhower correctly warned us to beware the military industrial complex! If a Republican can get it right why can't Mayor John?

CLOSE THE BASE! Rid Connecticut of instruments of mass murder like nuclear submarines!

Use the $50 billion to feed the poor, provide shelter to homeless veterans, or educate the next generation.

To paraphrase and old saying -- let's fund our schools and let Ollie North and his buddies sell candy bars to raise money for the military.

Serious Liberal is wrong.

It's not a question of IF we have a military infrastructure... it's WHERE. The question is what is our governor doing with Marine One? With Groton? With MetLife? Mayor John is RIGHT to ask.

Posted by CharterOak on May 17, 2005 - 9:22pm.

Also, just a thought...

Does anybody else think we have our priorities screwed up when Democrats can question Mayor DeStefano for raising an issue, but they won't question Gov. Rell for her inaction?

It's the old circular firing squad we're all too good at.

Posted by CharterOak on May 17, 2005 - 9:25pm.

Our priorities are to speak the whole truth. Don't you think its true that our country spends too much on defense (OFFENSE)? Doesn't Mayor John think we spend too much on defense?

Mayor John wants to take shots at the Governor because he thinks that's the red meat Democrats want.

But the whole truth is Democrats, like the rest of the electorate, want somebody -- anybody to speak up for what is right.

It seems like Mayor John will follow the same old path that has left us out of the Governor's mansion for far too long. He'll take pot shots at the Governor while failing to challenge the basic assumptions that frame the debate.

Mayor John WON'T say we spend too much on national defense. He WILL say that its not IF but WHERE we spend all that money. He WON'T say that Governor Rell can't save the base no matter what she did or will do becasue the base is of little military or POLITICAL value in Washington.

Good grief -- when will we learn. It's not the circular firing squad that diminishes our chances. Our chances are diminished because our "leaders" continue to provide us with ammunition by parsing words, avoiding the truth and offering rhetoric rather than solutions.

Are you listening Mayor John?

While I respect and share much of your concern about military spending in the United States, I think you are missing the point. The point is that Rell has stood by fiddling while the economic base around New London is being burnt down. People need jobs. They need good jobs. You would argue, and I think a lot of people agree with you, that working in the military industrial complex isn't a good job. So, we need a leader that will work to bring good jobs to an area, that will help an area transform its jobs to better jobs.

Mayor DeStefano often talks about what has happened with Lacey Manufacturing in Bridgeport. They are a precision manufacturing company that has transformed itself to providing health care devices. We need to be beating our swords into plowshares.

We need leaders in our state that will do more than simply react after the fact to a proposed base closing. We need leaders that will help us find innovative ways of creating new and better jobs, especially in areas where those jobs are particularly threatened.

Dude, you need to learn to pick the right fights and make well researched arguments if you are going to represent DeStefano.

"The point is that Rell has stood by fiddling while the economic base around New London is being burnt down. "
This quote is waaaay off base. You cant take the state's total economic and jobs reports and apply it across a smaller area automatically.

If you are going to attack, make sure you are not firing blanks.

Dear Aldon Hynes,

Thank you for answering your own question again. As a voter, I really appreciate it when campaign staffers tell me what questions I should be asking of my candidates.

I respect your concerns about military spending. But not as much as I respect your ability to put your concerns on the 'back-burner' and continue to dodge simple questions about your candidate. Questions like - Doesn't Mayor Destefano beleive our country spends too much on the military?

In the future I will try harder to engage in the dialog you prefer. I will not confuse this blog as a place where citizens can expect answers to our questions. I realize now that this is a forum for the Mayor's "Message of the Day".

Haleheartbleeder -- resistence is futile. In the future, please refrain from asking any questions that the campaign does not wish to answer. It only forces them to spend time reframing the question so that they may provide an answer that is 'on message'.

The Groton sub base is one of the best in the country. The Mayor is not out of line to challenge Rell on not standing up to her Republican friends who closed it down for political reasons.

Want to decrease military spending? Vote for a Democrat with a backbone. That way, we don't have to spend the amount of money this base closure will save in 20 years every 7 months in a foreign engagement like Iraq.

Wow! I must say that 'Serious Liberal' is the most self indulgent jerk I've met in a long time.

Wow! I'm hurt.

Various Comments:

HHB: New London's Per Capita Personal Income (PCPI) and Total Personal Income (TPI) rose at slower rate than the rest of Connecticut and Connecticut's PCPI and TPI rose at rates below the national average. (Source: Bureau of Economic Analysis). If you think the Rowland and Rell Regime has been good for New London or for Connecticut, I would encourage you to support your arguments. I'm sorry, I just don't see it.

Serious Liberal: I'm sorry that trying to return the discussion to topic of the post doesn't meet your personal agenda. I do think that 'anonymous' went a bit far in calling you a self indulgent jerk. However, your post does come across as a bit narcissistic; being upset that you can't shift this discussion to your pet issues.

I think your issues are important and we should have a well thought out and presented discussion about what types of economic growth are most beneficial for the state.
