Today is a sad day for Connecticut’s families.
The Pentagon’s announcement that the Groton Naval Base is on the list of military facilities to be closed is the latest in a series of recent blows to our state’s economy, most notably the loss of the Marine One Contract, and the MetLife lay-offs in Hartford.
Connecticut ranks 43rd of 50 states in job growth. If we keep going in this direction, we’ll soon be 50th in job growth.
Over 8,600 jobs are directly connected to the Groton Base, and according to a state economic report over 31,000 jobs in Connecticut are tied to the submarine base, along with $2 billion in total income and $3.3 billion in gross state product.

Connecticut workers have a right to ask: Where has Governor Rell been? The work required by our political leaders to prevent today’s announcement was work that should have been done over the past year. Sadly, until recent weeks, she has refused to travel to Washington to lobby on behalf of Connecticut’s working men and women. Now she says she is “shocked” at the Pentagon’s decision.Governor Rell may be “shocked” at today’s announcement, but what’s really shocking is the lack of leadership that results in the loss of tens of thousands of Connecticut jobs.
