The Debates

Posted by Aldon Hynes on May 13, 2005 - 5:06am.

There is a famous line attributed to Thomas Jefferson about how we must have an informed populous for democracy to work. Mayor DeStefano gets this. In his opening comments to Democracy School, he spoke about the importance of debate and deliberation. When he spoke at the Hartford Democracy for America Meetup, he encouraged people to come to this blog to discuss issues. Next Tuesday, he will participate in a debate sponsored by the Bridgeport Democratic Town Committee.

Recently, there has been a flurry of comments on this blog about issues that are important to people here. It has also gotten to some important questions about the nature of blogging and I would like to address some of them here.

One person suggested that “the blog is a form of democracy that must not be compromised”. I don’t think that is an adequate representation of what blogs are. There is no credentials committee establishing who has the right to a ‘vote’ here. There is no rules committee establishing the protocols for such ‘votes’.

No, this blog is set up to promote the candidacy of Mayor John DeStefano for Governor of Connecticut. It is publicity. It is advertising. It is an organizing tool. Due to Mayor DeStefano’s commitment to democracy, deliberation and debate, it will encourage, as mush as possible, an open, honest, and free flow of ideas. However, with my responsibilities to the blog and to the campaign, I have in the past and will continue in the future to step in and encourage people to be respectful and to seek an open, honest and free flow of ideas. This includes moderating and deleting posts where necessary.

Jeff Jarvis, who writes the blog BuzzMachine, has commented that his blog is like his living room. You are welcome to come in and argue, but defecating on the carpet is not permitted. I think this is a useful model. Some people have criticized me for being too lenient about the discussions here, others have criticized me for being too strict. In my view, some of the recent posts have been too silly, too strident and too divisive. They have not been part of an effort to work together to help make Connecticut a better state. I am disappointed with those comments, but I have let most of them stand.

I will continue to moderate this in a way that I believe will be most beneficial. If you have specific concerns, please feel free to contact me directly at aldon

With that, let us return to the debates. On Tuesday, Mayor DeStefano will address the Bridgeport Democratic Town Committee. I hope many of you will attend. I hope many of you will add comments here about what you think the issues that face our state are and will add your ideas about the best way to address them. Please join with me in searching for ways to work together to help make Connecticut a better state and in helping inform the populous.

I am very excited about the first Gubernatorial debate of the campaign season.

John is a master of policy and I cannot wait to see him in action!

I hope that we'll be able to have lots more of these debates will come!

Well put Alon! True, some of the comments are a bit silly (your threat of a spanking is duly noted), but I consider those such posts as the jelly on an otherwise dry piece of toast.

Speaking of bicycles, feel free to crack down on "disrespectful" posts, but also keep in mind that if the point of this blog is " ...to promote the candidacy of Mayor John DeStefano for Governor of Connecticut. It is publicity. It is advertising. It is an organizing tool." then it cannot also be a place for debate, it is then a place to convey a set of principles and ideas, not a place to form them. I think Mayor John is bigger than that. He has been a mayor of a city and is way too smart NOT to realize that he has a lot to learn about the views of the citizens of CT and about the issues that are weighing on families and businesses in the state. That is why politicians LISTEN to their constituents! And if he cant say that he will continue to grow as a leader in our state, than that will make me a sad panda.

Does Mayor John Rock, Alon?

HHB, Your comment appears self-contradictory. You suggest that the if the site is about promoting the Mayor's candidacy, then it can't also be a place to debate. Yet you go on to point out that an important aspect of any good candidate is their ability to listen. Hence, by having the Mayor listen to participate in the debate here, it is promoting his candidacy.

This is a place to promote the Mayor's candidacy and part of that includes making space for well thought out debate.

AH-
I appreciate that you may find my previous post "appears" contradictory. I dont agree, but I see where you're coming from. This seems more symantic than substantive, so I'll just take you at your word.
Although I think you denigrate yourself and this blog by stating that this is advertising - it is more than that.
Speaking of bicycles, I am gonna take a few minutes and meditate on this one as I was not able to get my 15 miles of biking in this morning. Going to get my OM on.

My wish list for debate topics:

1. What is Connecticut's competitive advantage in the global economy? How will your governorship build on it to create prosperity.

2. What will you do to make health care a more sustainable public expenditure, as well as more affordable to those covered under employer plans?

3. As Governor, how will you govern and politically organize to make people support the Democratic Party and progressive social change?

I'll be there. I posted the event at upcoming.org to help promote it here: http://upcoming.org/event/19337/

I hope the subject of transportation and pollution is raised. The traffic on the highways in Fairfield County is out of control and the resulting pollution is poisioning those who live near them.

I would like to hear how the candidates will manage the Democratically controlled general assembly. It won't do the party any good if an all-Dem state government becomes the liberal equivalent to the Republicans in DC. How will the mayor avoid alienating the minority party and be governor of the whole state?

Finally, I hope the subject of campaign organization is raised. It is very important that the selected candidate be able to win. We need a candidate who is going to aggressively attract and retain thousands of volunteers. Both Mayors currently also have a very serious name recognition issue they have to contend with. They need to start solving that problem immediately.

HHB, There is no denigration to say that this blog is in part advertising. It is instead an example of the honesty and forthrightness that we should be expecting from our leaders. I never suggested that that is all that it is about, but it is an important aspect.

David, thanks for adding a link to the event on upcoming.org. I think upcoming.org is an important site for grassroots organizing.

I'm up in Massachusetts for their State Democratic Convention. I hope to share thoughts about this here later.
