It's My Birthday (and we need to have a party)

Posted by John DeStefano on May 11, 2005 - 12:09pm.

Today is the day - 50 years old!

And I feel great and am thankful for so many things.  A great family, a great family at the City of New Haven, good health - and the best online campaign for Governor in Connecticut.

That all said our campaign to make Connecticut a place of excellence and accomplishment for our hard working families is a team effort.  So I wanted to suggest a great birthday present (for me!).  How about holding a house meeting.  Get your neighbors, your friends, your family talking about our campaign.  I want to hear their ideas, their concerns and provide them the opportuity to be part of our campaign to change.

So how about it?  Let's have a party!

Comments

Happy b-day Mr Mayor,

But you'll have to excuse me if I'm not in a mood for a party. You see I'm still upset that the man you are still saying doesn't deserve a primary,Joe Lieberman, and whose name will be on the same line as yours in 06 if both of your capaigns are a sucess went on the Senate floor yesterday and continued to lie to the people of this state and there isn't a peep about it on your blog.

Lieberman repeated the old meme that we are at a tipping point in Iraq and yet it is reported today that there are 70 attacks a day by insurgents and over 400 deaths from bombings in the last 2 weeks and your campaign ignores this.

82 billion dollars was just approved by the congress(New Havens share is 99.7 million to date http://www.nationalpriorities.org/Issues/Military/Iraq/highcost/costofwar.html ) to throw down the Iraqi drain which could have been used to build schools, provide jobs, provide healthcare or just not added to our kids future dept and because you're running for gov. your campaign thinks it's alright to say nothing about it.

Your chances of winning the race for Governor diminish every day you stay silent and continue to support Joe Lieberman as a Senator and it's time you stood up.

I've tried to hold my tongue and allow this blog to ignore the real world and play the "good Dem" but I can't any longer.I need to know if you are just gonna play the game or if you stand for anything.

I await your reply.

Is this just another example of how arm-chair progressives marginalize themselves?

We take a good cause (getting rid of Joe), and instead of working to build the popular support that might accomplish the goal we let our frustration or laziness make us think that throwing up stupid ultimatums to whomever is the most progressive candidate is a good idea.

Before we make DeStefano - or some state rep candidate or whoever - bend to that kind of ultimatum, we damn well better have done the groundwork to make sure we're not demanding they jump off a cliff.

If you want purity from the sidelines, vote Nader. If you want progressive change, find candidates that believe to their core - but also work your ass off to support a political reality that will allow them to enact that progressive change.

Theres already popular support
Look at this poll taken at the Wooster Street Cherry Blossum Fest

http://www.dumpjoe.com/

Those are votes from New Haven DEMS

The only thing missing is Leadership from people who want to be leaders. There's no ultimatum here but ignoring the elephant in the room iis why this place averages about 2 comments per thread.

Heres something new in the news Anonymous Bob.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7818807/site/newsweek/

Should this be discussed here or should there be another fluffy diary about free parking spaces for prius owners.

4 Ct people I know are leaving for Iraq or Afganistan in the next few weeks for a full yr.What do you think their families want to talk about.

Posted by kingfish on May 11, 2005 - 11:31pm.

Keith, I'm sorry you feel the way you do. I experience your post as an ultimatum that plays directly into the Republicans' strategy of divide and conquer.

"Let's pick off the support for the most progressive candidate because he isn't progressive enough on Joe Lieberman and the war."

"Let's pick off the support for the most progressive candidate because he hasn't spoken up firmly enough against the corporatists."

"Let's pick off the support of the most progressive candidate because he isn't ideologically pure enough on the environment, education, health care, affordable housing, civil rights, labor rights, animal rights, or whatever the cause du jour is."

"Let's make sure that progressives spend their time sniping at one another instead of building powerful coalitions."

No, I don't want to play the Republicans game on that. I want to build a coalition that includes people who detest Joe and people who support Joe. I want to build a coalition of people that believe we need to bring the troops home now and people that believe we can't cut and run. I want to build a coalition of people that believes that biotech will help bring jobs to Connecticut and people that view pharmaceuticals as large evil corporations.

How are we going to do that? I believe that we are going to do that, not by offering ultimatums, but by searching for common ground.

Some of that common ground comes from spirited discussions about what we can do in Connecticut to make sure that our soldiers are safe, that they return home unharmed, and that we reduce the needs for the United States to go overseas into countries like Iraq.

And yes, getting people to reduce their energy usage, even through puff pieces about prius parking is part of that battle.

So, I challenge you, and everyone who reads this blog. Go out, find out what people with other opinons than your own think. Find out why people believe we must be in Iraq and help address the causes and not just the symptoms.

Sorry Alon,

Running for governor also means running for the head of the Ct. Dem Party and people have a right to know the candidates views on ALL issues,National,State and Local and to judge our support by the answers we get.

If this Blog is to be successful and REAL it can no longer be a place that ignores the big issues in favor of "keeping it positive" or "suppoting the most progressive candidate".

On May 8, 2005 Corporal Lawrence R. Philippon of Hartford,CT became the 15th CT resident to be killed in the Iraq War.

I apoligize if I offended anyone and if you feel I was out of line but my soul aches.

Great blog. Great candidate. Great future for our state.

Posted by Anonymouse on May 12, 2005 - 10:55am.

Kingfish - You are not entitled to anything other than your vote. Mayor John is a great candidate and his candidacy has nothing to do with the war in Iraq. You are off-base. Maybe you should focus your energies on federal blogs.

Posted by Anonymouse on May 12, 2005 - 10:58am.

Anonymouse- Thanks for keeping it real. There are bigger "fish" to fry than Joe Lieberman...no pun intended.

Posted by Blogizlefoshizzle on May 12, 2005 - 11:08am.

anonymouse - you are waaaay off base yourself. the blogging community encourages - no, demands - that we ALL have an equal say and the free-flow of thoughts and ideas must be intertwined on these very pages. while i share your passion for the candidacy of Mayor John, the blog is a form of democracy that must not be compromised. peace.

That's totally uncool. BTW - I hate blogs that sponsor censorship!@#! Like dumpjoe.com!@! Do you know that dumpjoe is a totally censored ie facist blog. You should be ashamed of yourself Kingfish!

Posted by Anonymouse on May 12, 2005 - 12:35pm.

Dude:
Speaking of bicycles, what do you guys think of Howard Dean endorsing my hero Bernie Sanders - the coolest US Rep - non-partisan in the US House? He is so cool for having the courage to do that as Dem Party Chair..

Posted by Anonymouse on May 12, 2005 - 12:38pm.

"The blogging community encourages - no, demands - that we ALL have an equal say...on and on..." That's more crap than can fit in all the bomb craters in Iraq (created with the help of Sen. Joe). Let's not totally kid ourselves here in the blogosphere, dude. We are people generally commonly linked by our anonymity over a common idea. That idea being topical to the posting venue only.

And your notion that blogging is a form of democracy is so off-base, egotistical and untrue that it is laughable. Blogging is an expression of speech that is not free speech as it is being hosted by a commercial enterprise and is (only arguably) at best a form of reporting. I suggest you go deep sea kayaking to get a true perspective of your place on this planet - and besides, sea kayaking totally rocks!

Posted by haleheartbleeder on May 12, 2005 - 1:10pm.

Hale- Quit being such a buzzkill. I plan on making BLOGing my career and I won't let freedom haters like you stop me. BTW sea kayaking is way cool, but not as cool as frisbee golf(http://www.pdga.com/.

Posted by Blogizlefoshizzle on May 12, 2005 - 1:20pm.

DUUUUUUDE! FRISBEE GOLF WHOOOHOOOO! If Mayor John Played Frisbee golf that would be way cool! We could totally make a fundraiser out of it. We could do like $5 per hole - minus beer money (Dont drink and drive, kids) and totally raise a bunch of ching so the Mayor could buy more bling!

Oh, but if you are planning on makingt blogging a career, you probably cant afford it - unless you are a highly paid political consultant blogger, in that case you should probably front the dough for other bloggers.

Speaking of bicycles, i love those bike lanes on Capitol Ave.

Posted by haleheartbleeder on May 12, 2005 - 1:45pm.

i had a horrible day at the vets office. my 8 year old son, orvis, came to me crying that his pet hamster, sassafrass, had been sleeping for 3 days. not wanting to dissapoint the boy i took little sassafrass to the vet who told orvis that his hamster had gone to a better place. around 2pm we took little sassafrass home, put him in a box and buried him in the backyard. orvis was devistated. anyway, mayor john rocks!!!

Posted by blogforpeaceman on May 12, 2005 - 2:06pm.

Peace- Total bummer man, I had a ferret that drank battery acid once. Time will heal, I promise.

Posted by Blogizlefoshizzle on May 12, 2005 - 2:22pm.

dude, sorry about your kid's hamster, but Im very happy to hear that you recycled him. Way to think Globally and Act Locally.

Speaking of bicycles, I compost almost everything I use. I even have a compost pile that wont be done until 2065!!

BTW - Kingfish, put up or shut up...whay dont you run against Joe? Also, you are citing that eraserboard poll as your proof of support? That's crazy talk. If I saw people from dumpjoe taking a poll, I wouldnt give them the time of day. Where was the poll taken anyway? Outside of uber-elite, ultra-liberal-cuz-i-can-afford-to-be, never-a-care-in-the-world, legacy-laden Yale?

Posted by haleheartbleeder on May 12, 2005 - 2:24pm.

Wow!

Yesterday afternoon I came by to wish the Mayor a Happy Birthday, only I refrained from doing so b/c I didn't want to be the first, (or only), poster.

Now there are almost 20 posts on this thread!?!!!

Looks like Kingfish started a veritable blog-storm....

My two cents is that the war remains a huge issue for many of us Dems, even as the mainstream media starts to make excuses for not covering it. But I wouldn't have brought it up on this particular thread.

Posted by TrueBlue on May 12, 2005 - 4:23pm.

TrueBlue don't worry about not wishing John a happy birthday, he doesn't read the blog anyway. If you think entries by "John DiStefano" are really from him, you are kidding yourself.

Posted by Anonymous1 on May 12, 2005 - 7:28pm.

You know, Anonymous1, I have to disagree with you. I've seen John in action in New Haven for almost a dozen years. The fact is that he does listen -- better than almost any other politician I know.

I've been to Mayor's Nights In, and Mayor's Nights Out, (in the neighborhoods), and John has heard about every complaint imaginable. This is New Haven, and you'd need to see it in person to know just how much the Mayor "gets" it.

Anyway, isn't DeStefano by far the better Democrat over Malloy and Bysiewicz? And certainly he would be an exceedingly competent executive-in-chief.

So much of the noise against John is just plain carping. We will all have to pick, and live with, either candidate A, B, or C. Or we can just stand on the sidelines and complain about how none of them are the second coming of Howard Dean.

Posted by TrueBlue on May 12, 2005 - 8:31pm.

Trueblue: "Or we can just stand on the sidelines and complain about how none of them are the second coming of Howard Dean." ???

That will certainly NOT be a complaint from me. I'd complain IF ONE WAS the second coming of Howard Dean.
