My Friends are Your Friends: One House at a Time

Posted by Guest Blogger on May 5, 2005 - 12:39pm.

Janna Wagner was born and raised in New Haven and lives in Wooster Square.

Having friends over is a common event at my apartment. It’s been that way since I can remember. I’m always finding reasons to bring people together and crowd old and new friends into my tiny flat in Wooster Square. But, last night felt different.

We weren’t at my place to celebrate a birthday or holiday. We weren’t there to gnosh and gossip. We weren’t there to ponder deep thoughts or pop culture. We were there to dialogue and learn more about the issues that impact our State and, inevitably, our lives every day.

Last night was special.  Last night I held the first DeStefano for Connecticut House Meeting in history.

Fourteen guests introduced themselves and shared their reasons for coming to the House Party. They ranged from concern over the economy to education. We watched the campaign DVD and learned more about what the Mayor would do if he became governor. We learned that although we were a diverse group of folks, we cared about many of the same things—job growth, tax reform, the environment, economic and educational opportunity. People agreed and challenged each other, asked for more information, and made connections.

At the end of the DVD, the Mayor spoke about the importance of relationships and how change can only happen when people come together and work with and for each other. It made sense that we were all there nestled and cozy in my apartment--friends, family, and friends of friends-- beginning a grassroots efforts to change our cities, towns and communities, one house at a time.

Today I believe, more than ever, that dialogue and citizen participation is critical--not just to Connecticut’s gubernatorial race but to the future of our state and democracy more broadly.  Today, I have even more hope that we will create a better Connecticut for all our residents. Today, I am even more certain that with our help and hard work, John DeStefano will be the candidate to do just that.

I have thought about house meetings for a while and Janna's made me so excited about the reality of them. People were actually sitting around together talking about the future of our state. Progressives always talk about bringing people back into politics--yesterday, Janna made it happen. I have worked for the Mayor for 4 years on and off and it isn't often that I get to hear him say something that I have never heard him say before. But in the DVD he has the chance to simply explain why it is he does what he does--an opportunity that neither television stations or reporters give a politician very often. He gives some of the most powerful and meaningful explanations for public service I have heard anywhere, and they make me proud to work for him. Bringing people together to talk about the future of our state is one of the best things you can do to help build a better Connecticut. The Mayor doesn't just want to talk to you--he wants to hear from you, on the blog, through house meetings, in every way possible. Sign up to hold a house meeting!

This was a wonderful entry. It is so exciting to see a successful house meeting - the very first one! The house meeting program is a powerful tool. We, as "ordinary citizens", can have a substantial impact on the political process by owning our own power to spread the word and create positive change. House meetings are easy and fun - let's all try and plan one soon!
