Building the team in Bethany

Posted by Guest Blogger on May 3, 2005 - 3:51pm.

Becky Bombero is a UCONN political science and communications graduate.  She is a member of the campaign staff.

I was in Bethany yesterday for the elections. It was a historic day in a traditionally Republican community as Democrats practically swept the election with Derrylyn Gorski (First Selectman), Steve Thornquist (Selectman) leading the team of democrats.

It was great to get back to retail politics - because truly "all politics is personal".  It was great to see the volunteers on the phones talking to their fiends and neighbors - personalizing the vote.  As the day went on it seemed like a high Republican turnout - with nearly 2:1 republican registration this could have been a horrible sign.  But with a true bipartisan coalition in place the Democratic ticket prevailed.

Standing there in Bethany Town hall, beneath the canopy of crepe paper I listened to the returns.  As the final machines were read aloud victory became clear and citizens both young and old celebrated the historic moment in Bethany history.

I enjoyed going to help on Election Day - and the democrats in Bethany really appreciated the support.  We shared tricks of the trade - and we both can be more efficient as result.

The mayor of course stopped by to greet volunteers at headquarters and stopped at the polls to show his support for the candidates in Naugatuck, Woodbridge and Bethany.

While results in the other communities were not as exciting - Bethany showed us that we can beat the Republicans no matter how long they have held the office.

What do you think we need to do to beat the Republicans in '06?

Comments

"United we stand divided we fall" The number of volunteers and amount of support displayed for the democratic candidates during the elections in Woodbridge, Bethany, and Naugatuck was fantastic. It is extremely important to continue to support our democratic community leaders in the future to ensure that our ideals are represented in State Government.
