This Earth Day, I’ve spent a bit of time thinking about the small ongoing discussions that we all face in our day to day life. People have repeatedly pointed out to me that Mayor DeStefano drives a hybrid. Driving a hybrid isn’t a big sacrifice. I drive a 2001 hybrid which is one of the best cars I’ve driven in years, and each year they get better. However, it does reflect the sort of choices that we make in our day-to-day life.

Several towns around Connecticut will make choices at the voting booths on May 2nd. They will be electing new mayors and first selectmen. Some people will make a further choice to get out and get involved in the elections. They may stand at polling locations or call people as part of a get out the vote effort. These decisions will be based in part on the decisions that current elected officials have made.

The Associated Press is currently running a story about Republican Mayor Ron San Angelo of Naugatuck. “During his race for office two years ago, he promised to end a practice of letting borough employees take town cars home.

But he soon ordered that a town-owned police cruiser be equipped with a police radio and be made available to him.”

Personally, I’m proud of the choices I have made, both in terms of the car I drive, and the candidate I work for. I am glad to work for a candidate that chooses to show his commitment to the environment by driving a hybrid.

I hope many of you spend some time thinking about the daily choices you make. I hope many of you take the opportunity to make you choice known at the polls on May 2nd and perhaps even get involved in a local election.

So, what do you drive and what drives you?

I drove a Lincoln Navigator until I decided to run for Governor. At which point I became environmentally conscious, and traded in my road-hog for a hybrid.

I have always considered myself environmentally conscious. However, years ago, I drove a Land Rover. I admit that environmentally, it wasn't a great choice. I have grown and I have learned. It took me a few years before the choice of a hybrid became clear to me. Another friend of mine, who has a great environmental record, recently traded in his Chevy Suburban for a Prius.

"StrangerThanFiction" provides a good illustration of the choices we make. He has chosen to be a cynical detractor. He is choosing to be part of the problem.

In the section about comments, we ask that commentators "keep comments clean and respectful" and that we reserve the right to remove comments. I do not believe that StrangerThanFiction's comment was particularly respectful and I considered whether it should be removed.

However, I want to encourage discourse, even with people who cannot be respectful in a dialog, so I this time I have chosen to leave it up.

I hope that we, as a community, develop good methods of dialog with people who have different opinions than our own, including those who cannot express their opinions in a respectful manner.

I've never tried to impress someone with the car I drive, and I'm proud of that. And the most I've ever spent on a car is several thousand dollars. No car payments for me!

Currently I drive a very old Toyota. If my car were a person, it would be a junior in high school. It is 17 years old.

However, I have to admit, that I, like Howard Dean, drive a SUV. Yet my Landcruiser was never meant to be my primary car. I bought it when I lived in RI out of necessity. I needed something to tow my boat.

When my 1987 Volvo wagon died a year and a half ago, I thought about replacing it. But as I live and work in downtown, I drive exceedingly little. So I am still hanging on to my beast.
