Join the Campaign

One Person At a Time

There are politicians who always want to hedge their bets, cut their losses and wait until the last second before making any decisions. Think about almost every Hartford Democratic politician during our last gubernatorial election in Connecticut--most of them stayed as far away as they could.

But I am constantly surprised by how many smart, thoughtful and committed public servants in this campaign are willing to begin supporting and helping the Mayor.

I just came back from Hartford where I had lunch with Gary Reardon, the smart, thoughtful and progressive Democratic Town Chair of Waterbury.

A former mayoral candidate and earnest public servant, he is focused on what is going to help Waterbury grow jobs, improve its schools and keep its budget balanced. And today, he was focused on John DeStefano as a candidate for Governor.

I was moved to hear how much he respects the Mayor, who remains a relative unknown in Waterbury. What does he like about John DeStefano, as a candidate for Governor? He sees an effective, proven, creative, hands-on problem solver with a record of results and a passion for using government to make peoples' lives better. Let's keep spreading the word.

Comments

Clearly John DeStefano is the better Democrat in this primary. I know New Haven, and I trust where John is coming from. He would never sell out the working people of CT. Never. I wish had the same confidence in all of CT's Dems.

I also believe John would be the best of all possible Governors. As mayor of New Haven, he has done a terrific job of managing diverse interests. And contrary to some of the troll opinions, he has excelled as a fiscally responsible administrator. He is not a tax and spender.

What I need to be convinced of, however, is that John represents our best chance of winning the governorship. Is he our most likely champion? Can he position himself in a way that builds towards a certain defeat of Jodi Rell?

Key to this is CT's towns, (and not the cities.) Will Eastern CT Dems come to trust and believe in him? What about FFLD County, or Torrington? Does John play in Enfield?

What a great challenge! I hope you guys get him there....

A personal response to Cautious:

I believe John is the more likely candidate to beat Jodi. That is both my position and the campaign's, but from now on, this is all my call (so if you don't like what I have to say please focus your anger on me).

As I see it, John's candidacy represents Change in Connecticut, a break from decades of the same thing. There are several reasons for this. John is a Mayor, not a long term official in a state wide office. He brings a new perspective, a new VISION for the state. Nothing agains the other democrats in the field or thinking about entering the field, but John is pushing an agenda of real, meaningful change to several areas of state government. I have heard the Secretary of State speak and her agenda appeared to me to be esentially saying she'd do mostly the same but better.

And frankly, if you want more of the same, you aren't going to vote for John. But you probably are going to vote for the incumbant. Satisfied people don't like to change horses. We need a candidate who will say this is one major difference between my vision for the state and what Jodi has done. And here is another. And another. If a Democrat runs on Hartford Experience it sounds to me to be a subtle nod that there won't be any bold new initiatives for change. Because if there are, then that experience is less valuable.

John is about change. He is about making Connecticut number one in job growth, standard of living and education. He's about making us proud to be Connecticut residents. John has done that for New Haven and that's the kind of experience I want my candidate to run on.

Re: Cautious's comment. Hi Cautious. This why I think the Mayor can win this election. Governor Rell is one of the most popular Governors in the country. The candidate who is going to be able to defeat her is going to defeat her is going to be the candidate who reminds Connecticut's citizens that their quality of life is rapidly declining and who has a compelling vision and a compelling record that offers voters a real alternative. No other Democrat has this. Every political candidate running for any office in the country says they believe in ethics, integrity, job creation and education. Against someone as popular as Rell, that is just not going to cut it. Who has the real ideas? Who has the record? Who is the problem solver? John DeStefano. People anticipate the Mayor's biggest challenge to be expanding his appeal beyond Connecticut's big cities--but his message has been so well received in Wethersfield and Simsbury and Greenwich and Ridgefield. If people vote against this Governor, it will be because they are voting for a different Connecticut, and he is the only person who can offer that. In terms of the mechanics of winning, the Mayor has a geographic base of support, constant exposure in the Channels 3 and 8 media markets and he was won more elections than all of his opponents and potential opponents combined.
