It's a pleasure to meet you Matt

Posted by Ben Fielding on March 22, 2005 - 1:40pm.

Mayor DeStefano and I attended the Newington Democratic Town Committee meeting last night. There were balloons everywhere, along with a feast of meatballs, pepperoni, cheese and crackers. I wish I could say that Newington was celebrating the Mayor’s arrival but we were actually attending their DTC’s anniversary celebration.

The Mayor met lots of smiling faces, including a young man named Matt who was attending his first Democratic Town Committee. Joe Klet, the Newington Town Chair, introduced us to Matt because he was so excited to see a first timer at the meeting. It is surprisingly rare to meet younger men and women at these meetings. I have attended dozens of Democratic Town Committees and I have seen again and again that men and women under 30 hardly ever attend them.

In many ways, this mirrors voter participation, so I have to wonder: what will it take to get more younger adults to attend DTC meetings? And if they do begin attending in greater numbers, will their voter participation rates increase as well?

What can we do to engage young Democrats, they are the future of our party and they essential for our survival!

Glad to see the Mayor making his rounds to the Democratic Town Committees, I'm sure once he gets his record and name out there, there will be a grassroots insurgency for John DeStefano that'll carry us all the way to Election Day 2006. This blog looks really good btw, props to whoever designed it.

I also wonder why more young people aren't involved especially since most of the people I talk to in their 20s are democrats. I feel like we are always invited to happy hours but then no one follows up with substantive things for us to do. I hope a bunch of younger folks start having those house meetings I saw on your website. They seem like an easy way to talk about politics without having to write a big check. I am definitely going to have one!
