Social Security Stories

Posted by Roland Lemar on March 11, 2005 - 11:12am.

Hey Everyone, I wanted to call your attention to a site that Democracy for America has up and running:
Social Security Stories

The site has stories of how Social Security has impacted people's lives all across the country. All the stories are organized by location so that you can input your zipcode and see how Social Security is working in our state and in our respective communities.

The stories that people are sharing are very good, and as Democracy for America states "... We hoped that putting a human face on Social Security would help shape the debate over the Republican plans to privatize and phase it out... But we were shocked at how moving — and deeply personal — these stories turned out to be."

Check it out.

Those are some great stories. I don't expect Social Security to be around when I turn 65 so I'm planning accordingly, but it is good to see people talking about how important this is for their lives. Thanks for the link.

BUt as democrats, I think we need to ask ourselves "What do we want Social Security to be" We keep letting republicans define these programs for us. We have becoe too reactive instead of proactive. I like the blog setup Shonu - good work

What's wrong with keeping the system the way it is, just raising the income level at which you stop contributing? The way it is structured, no income over $90,000/year is charged social security tax

If ALL income fell under the SS umbrella the contribution the rate could be cut in half for both employee and empolyer and the system would be solvent forever. In order to "save" SS the Greenspan Commission enacted the most regressive tax in history and now W is trying to say the bonds purchased with that money are useless.ALL income should fall under the SS umbrella.Trust fund babies should pay their fair share too.

If we want to preserve Social Security, and block BushCo.'s radical Republican agenda, one thing is essential. Namely that every last Democratic Senator falls in line behind Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid.

Have Senate Dems coalesced into a solid Opposition Party? If Bush, Rove, Frist and DeLay are going to be stopped, we need them to. The most important thing is that we stand together, as Democrats.

That is all I'm going to say on this subject.

Sure, more taxes are all we need, until we sign up more illegal aliens and SSI nutcases for "benefits", at which time we'll just take even more income from working people. Then, we can give it to more non-working non-citizens, and the cycle of big government continues! Love that Socialist agenda!!
