Blogs rule!

Posted by John DeStefano on March 8, 2005 - 12:57pm.

WE HAVE ARRIVED. Connecticut's first statewide candidate blog is up and running. Great government starts with great politics which comes from people talking to one another.

In my 12 years as Mayor some of our best ideas came from citizens who talked with me at Mayor's Night In or Mayor's Night Out — our open office hours. Too much of our politics is candidates talking to voters on TV ads — but with no chance to talk back. Our best possibilities come from talking to one another. So let's begin to talk.

I promise to post and respond regularly and want to thank four regular campaign bloggers. They are Shonu Gandhi — who worked so hard to get the BLOG up. Roland Lemar, Alyssa Rosenberg and Matt Bailey will be regular contributors. Special thanks to our BLOG masters at ECHO DITTO. Let the talk begin and let's change the future of Connecticut!

First! :-)

Welcome to the blogosphere! Thank you for providing this forum for us to talk to you and the campaign. It will be great to meet the regular bloggers, but I hope you'll keep posting to the blog too.

I'm glad one of our New Haven Democrats believes in people power and Free Speech!

Congrats Mayor!!! Personally knowing two of your regular bloggers (Roland and Alyssa), I am thrilled to see what is going to be happening on this site! If those two are allowed to openly speak their minds and voice their opinions on the issues happening in our state - we are all in for a treat

First-time blogger here! Heard about this blog on the news. I just wanted to say I really respect all you do in support of environmental issues (including driving a hybrid yourself!) and I'm rooting for you in 2006!

Very brave move, Mr. Mayor. I hope it helps bring about real discourse here in Connecticut.

I was looking at your issue page and noticed that although you take on some of Rowlands corperate crony tax cuts ALOT is missing. According to the statehouse members I've been in contact with the "carveouts" for certain industries and corperations put in place during the Rowland debacle are costing the state between 2 and 6 BILLION(yeah with a B) per yr.Although some of these "carveouts" may be worth it to the people of CT. most were bought from our legislature and Governor for campaign contributions.
Any thoughts Mr. Mayor?

Johnny: If you announced tomorrow that you were an avowed Socialist, which, if any, of your positions on issues might need to change? Are there any aspects of Capitalism you could embrace? In a DeStefano administration, would my taxes go up?

Can't we all just get along? Why do some people object angrily to the legal confiscation of their property and wages? We are the World! We've got what it takes to take what you've got! GET USED TO IT!!!!

Fred asked good questions. Just because you and your liberal rump swabs can't address issues, that's no reason to call names and post broken links.

I wish the rest of CT was seeing the turn-around that New Haven is enjoying. John is a highly capable administrator who has managed a wide diversity of interests.

Wasn't it Bridgeport that declared bankruptcy??

Posted by Anonymous on March 9, 2005 - 12:30am.

Bridgeport is just another Democrat test tube gone bad. They only need more money. Don't you get it?? If that doesn't work, they need more money. See??

Glad to see this is up. Just one suggestion: make people type in a name, or make them type the word "anonymous" in, so we don't end up with 20 different "anonymous"es. That said, I like the registration-free set up.

CT's going True Blue in 2006!

Fred,

DeStefano believes that markets and free enterprise create jobs but that their smooth functioning require public investment and regulatory intervention. He says so in his recent piece concerning the Rell budget's shortcomings which you can find on the main site. By the way, this is an opinion that the overwhelming majority of Americans have, including a substantial number of conservatives. Check out historical Gallup polls and you'll see.

An "avowed Socialist" would want to transfer the means of production to workers through state ownership of business. That's not DeStefano.

Most importantly, there is a lot a fiscal conservative could like about a DeStefano administration. Right now, the state is a dysfunctional marketplace. In some cases this is because of government, such as its poor tax structure. In other cases it is because of a lack of government such as the absence of a transportation strategy. The Mayor has realistic plans to address both challenges.

Give those ideas a chance. I think you will find them superior to the status quo.

Dear Anonymous,

About Bridgeport: It was the republican Marian Moran who declared bankruptcy in Bridgeport. Mayor Moran was a good “mother” figure, but lacked the vision and competence to bring Bridgeport out of their economic distress. In a panic, she declared the city “bankrupt”.

At that time, a group of business interests and young democrats took over the Democratic Party to bring economic revitalization to Bridgeport. The Bridgeport Regional Business Council (no small group) took a leading roll in establishing long-term goals for the effort. Union agreements and compromises were made, and real turn around was in process. This effort was not, (repeat, not led by) Joe Ganum, but by about two dozen talented members of the city council and/or town committee.

Seeing the economic vitality of the turn around, investors sent money into Bridgeport. This money proved too much for the Mayor and some of his confidants. Gradually, power consolidated in the hands of a few (many of whom are now in jail), and the economic development plan veered off course in a wave of back room decisions that benefited their own shallow interest.

The current administration, now clean from those in Jail, consists of many survivors from the early days of the New Democrats. They are wiser today, but just as determined to change the city for the better. Should you visit Bridgeport, you will see a city on course, but about six years behind New Haven.

Those of us who lived in New Haven in the eighties remember the empty stores and high crime. Fortunately for New Haven, Mayor Destefano was not corrupt, understood the times, and led the city toward the renewal we see today.

I have little doubt he will do the same for all the suburbs and cities in Connecticut.

As a member of the Wallingford Town Council I fully support your candidacy for Governor. The state needs your integrity, fiscal management, and sound direction to bring us back to a stable economy with growth and job opportunity. I have volunteered on your website to assist you in your candidacy. Thank you for making this incredible personal decision to serve the people of the great state of Connecticut. You have my full support.
