Governor-hopeful visits Winsted

WINSTED - Gubernatorial hopeful John DeStefano came to the city Saturday to gather support from local Democrats.

"He is stumping for governor," Democratic Committee Chairman Steven Sedlack said Wednesday.

DeStefano, the Mayor of New Haven, is campaigning against Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy for the party’s nomination to face incumbent Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell.

Rell took office when former Gov. John Rowland resigned amid charges of corruption during the summer of 2004.

Rowland was subsequently convicted of misusing his office and is serving a sentence in state prison.

Rell announced her candidacy for a full term in October.

DeStefano made a series of stops in the Northwest Corner during the last few days to garner support, stopping at Jessie’s Restaurant at 142 Main St. Saturday morning.

Former Democratic Secretary of the State candidate Audrey Blondin endorsed DeStefano Thursday during a stop at the Northfield Firehouse in Litchfield.

Blondin officially endorsed the candidate during the town’s Democratic Committee meeting before interviewing him on Cablevision Channel 5 later in the day.

The event was a chance for the party faithful to meet DeStefano and hear about his vision for the state during the next four years, Blondin said.

DeStefano was also scheduled to make stops in Thomaston, Kent, and Litchfield in addition to Winchester.

"He is turning on the gas and visiting as many towns as he can," Sedlack said.
