New London Mayor Endorses DeStefano for Governor
April 25, 2006
New Haven:John DeStefano - Democratic candidate for governor - is honored to be endorsed by New London Mayor Elizabeth Sabilia. She made the announcement at a news conference on the steps of New London City Hall on Monday April 24th.
"John DeStefano quite clearly understands the challenges facing cities and towns throughout the State," said Mayor Sabilia. "In the City of New London, we strive to provide a quality, equal education and to keep our neighborhoods safe and livable. More than any other candidate for governor, John understands those challenges. The City of New London and the City of New Haven are strikingly similar. We both are host to numerous non-profit agencies, to regional hospitals, and fine institutions of higher learning. We also are home for some of the citizens of the State that are in the most need. John faced those challenges, and through his achievements as Mayor, he has improved the lives of those that live and work in the great City of New Haven. I look forward to John bringing that tenacity to the state of Connecticut."
"I am grateful for Mayor Sabilia's support," said DeStefano. "Beth is a wonderful public servant who understands the squeeze that Connecticut families are facing. Southeastern Connecticut has been neglected for too long. Its economy needs to be diversified and this can only happen if the state makes the proper investments in workforce development, transportation infrastructure, and housing. New London's support is critical to my campaign and I'm thrilled our coalition in Southeastern Connecticut is getting stronger by the day."
DeStefano's New London support includes State Rep. Ernest Hewitt and New London's police union, AFSCME Council 15. DeStefano is also assured of getting a vast majority, if not all, of New London's Democratic delegates to the state Democratic Convention.
DeStefano has received the endorsement of dozens of elected officials, including U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, U.S. Rep. John Larson, former U.S. Congressman Sam Gejdenson, and Lt. Gov. Kevin Sullivan. More than 25 labor unions representing 100,000 working men and women have also endorsed DeStefano for governor. His campaign has raised more than $3.2 million - more than any Democratic gubernatorial candidate in Connecticut history.
