John DeStefano understands that eliminating barriers to opportunities for women is essential to a strong, prosperous Connecticut.

John DeStefano Jr. understands women's issues. He knows barriers to equal opportunities for women exist in many areas. John believes that addressing women's issues and needs are essential to the growth and prosperity of our state. He recognizes the importance of supporting Women Owned Businesses, expanding Childcare, promoting Anti-Domestic Violence initiatives, protecting Reproductive Rights and ensuring access to quality Healthcare.
Women Owned Business
John has supported women-owned business in New Haven and is committed to continuing that support as governor of Connecticut. He recognizes the need to eliminate the "glass ceiling" that has too long denied opportunities to too many women. And he understands the need to level the playing field, enabling women to gain equal access to capital and credit. In New Haven, John has created innovative ways to alleviate this problem and he is ready to create creative solutions for the state.
Childcare
John not only wants to continue early childhood education programs but also to expand availability of childcare. He has always supported pre-kindergarten programs and strives to achieve universal pre-K in the State of Connecticut. Other states have achieved this and he knows we can, too.
Domestic Violence
In the United States, a domestic violence episode occurs every 9 seconds and approximately 85% of the victims are women. These and other statistics are the reason that John vehemently supports anti-violence initiatives and tough laws against domestic violence.
Reproductive Rights
A woman's right to choose is exactly that: her right. John will uphold her privacy and support her decisions. He is committed to supporting women's reproductive rights, age-appropriate sexual education and access to birth control.

Access to quality health insurance is a nation- and statewide problem, with increasing numbers of women of childbearing age lacking adequate health insurance. Nationally, birth control is the highest out-of-pocket medical expense of women of this age group. This gender-bias in access to healthcare is unjust and should be eliminated. Women need access to affordable and comprehensive healthcare. Connecticut, along with eight other states, has broad-based refusal laws that allow certain organizations to deny women contraceptive coverage.
