DeStefano on Protecting Our Environment

As mayor, John DeStefano demonstrated that protecting our environment is about protecting the quality of life in our neighborhoods and communities.

John DeStefano, Jr. understands that protecting our environment is about protecting the health of our families, the physical and economic potential of our land, and the quality of life in our communities. Clean air and water and the preservation of open space are not abstract luxuries, but fundamental building blocks of the kind of Connecticut that we want and deserve.

John has a proven track record of environmental accomplishments, and not simply a list of positions taken.

Air Pollution from Power Plants

In addition to opposing noxious uses such as the proposed oil-fired restart of the English Station power plant in the New Haven neighborhood with the highest asthma levels, John DeStefano has taken leadership for cleaner air on the demand-side of the equation. When John became Mayor of New Haven, he created an energy committee to find ways of combining cost savings with energy conservation.

“Why would we wait for leadership to come down from the top—it is up to us to show how to tackle these issues, whether climate change, air pollution or what-have-you. If we lead, Washington will follow.”
—John DeStefano, Clean Air Cool Planet Conference, May 12, 2003

Today, the City saves over $4 million each year in avoided energy costs in one of Connecticut's most aggressive conservation programs, while preventing an estimated 35,000 tons of pollutants from entering our air. A smart, well-run government combined with better assistance to businesses and residents in achieving similar savings is easily one of the most basic and beneficial investment our state can make in air quality - and it is a solid investment from a dollars-and-cents perspective too.

Building on energy conservation, John DeStefano led New Haven to become the first community in the Northeast to commit to using 20% renewable energy by the year 2010. This goal is a commitment to leading the way towards replacing dirty power plants with clean, sustainable sources of power. In Connecticut, it is also a commitment to supporting the emerging fuel cell industry, which is clustering in our state. New Haven has one of the first fuel cells in the state operating at its water treatment plant -- a fuel cell made by a Connecticut manufacturer.

This major commitment to renewable energy will cost less than 5% in 2010 of what New Haven is saving now through energy conservation - meaning that John DeStefano has made New Haven a national leader protecting our environment while saving millions of dollars!

Pollution from cars, trucks and buses

John has been active in pushing for Clean Cars legislation at the legislature, and has backed up that advocacy in New Haven. The City has one of Connecticut's first natural gas fueling stations, and has purchased natural gas and electric vehicles for its city fleet.

Around the time Yale researchers were releasing a major study showing the health risks to children from school bus emissions, John DeStefano was announcing a series of partnerships that switched New Haven's diesel to ultra-low sulfur diesel, and is following up over the summer of 2004 by installing particle traps on these buses to eliminate a combined 90% of the asthma-causing pollution. New Haven became the second community in Connecticut to make these critical improvements, and John will fight to continue these efforts to protect our children's health.
