As Blog For CT mentioned in our last entry, we want to try and bring our readers not only a unique glimpse of the campaign trail but also a unique perspective on the state. Connecticut's not a big state, but its history is rich and interesting. For those of you fortunate enough to attend last night's event in East Hampton, you'll know what we mean.
East Hampton is home to two important pieces of the state's history. Nestled in Middlesex County up against the winding Connecticut River, it is home to the Comstock Bridge, one of three remaining covered bridges in the state. Dating back to 1873, it spans the Salmon River and features an authentic example of a Howe truss, which utilizes vertical iron rods supported by diagonal timber. Which is the type of thing you're interested in if you really enjoy covered bridges. Personally, Blog for CT prefers bailey bridges.

Aside from the Comstock Bridge, East Hampton is home to former Connecticut governor William A. O'Neill, the last Democrat to serve as governor of the state. Bill O'Neill was a champion of working men and women and a powerful advocate for education reform in the state. He worked tirelessly to raise teachers' salaries in the 1980's and modernized Connecticut's roads and bridges. (The Comstock Bridge being an exception). O'Neill improved care for the elderly and the mentally ill and his administration made great strides in improving the quality of Connecticut's water supplies. After inheriting a 22 billion dollar deficit, Gov. O'Neill's administration turned the tide and created new jobs and a budget surplus despite the dismal economic environment of the Reagan years. He served from 1980 to 1991, making him the second longest serving governor in Connecticut's history. Jonathan Trumbull only beat him by ten days.
John DeStefano thanked Bill O'Neill for his years of honorable service to the state and citizens of Connecticut. The Mayor remembered fondly a time, under O'Neill's leadership, when the state government worked in the best interest of all the state's citizens. He's proud to champion the same working families and values that Gov. O'Neill did during his time in Hartford. Most importantly, he's proud to be offering a real choice in leadership again.
Looking for something to do this weekend? Saturday, Mayor DeStefano will be at meet and greets in Danbury, Thomaston, and Meriden. Check the events page for more details.
Until then, Blog for CT is heading off to some new part of the state, to find out more obscure facts (hopefully more dinosaurs) and to talk to Connecticut voters about the real choice facing voters this fall.
