New Haven - John DeStefano, Democratic candidate for governor, joined supporters and Lt. Governor Candidate Scott Slifka on Wednesday to mark the opening of his campaign's Waterbury headquarters at 117 Bank Street.
The Waterbury headquarters will serve as a center of operations for staff and volunteers as they aggressively conduct phone-banking, voter contact, and canvassing operations leading up to the August 8th primary. Volunteers, notably members of Waterbury's police Local 1237, will also work out of the Bank Street office.
"Today marks an important step in reaching out to Waterbury voters about the real choices facing our families this election," said DeStefano. "I am running to help working families who are getting squeezed by skyrocketing health care costs, soaring energy prices, and property taxes that keep inching up. Our state's inability to create high quality jobs makes it even more difficult for families to make ends meet. Nobody knows this better than people in Greater Waterbury - a region which has lost thousands of manufacturing jobs and consistently has the highest unemployment rate in the state."
DeStefano continued, "As governor, I would propose the immediate elimination of the personal property tax on manufacturing equipment and I would make commuter rail along I-84 a reality."
DeStefano's campaign has local headquarters in Hartford, East Haven, and New Britain. The campaign will open offices in Hamden on Friday and in Bridgeport on Monday.
