Silly charge backfires on GOP

A New Haven Register Editorial

Prosecute Ward for practicing politics without a license. We are shocked — well, not really — that a Republican would want to waste taxpayer money on a frivolous investigation of a candidate for next year’s Democratic gubernatorial nomination.

State Rep. Robert M. Ward of North Branford, House Republican minority leader, said he was "shocked" as well to see a television broadcast of New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr. "operating heavy equipment without proper licenses." Ward has written the public safety commissioner demanding an investigation. He also wants the attorney general and the chief state’s attorney to look into the matter.

Please, the joke has gone far enough.

DeStefano is unlikely to displace any heavy equipment operators from their jobs.

With a demolition contractor manager inches away, DeStefano Monday turned the claw of a 60-ton excavator 90 degrees so that it could later take a first bite out of the Coliseum, which is being razed. The stunt was a safe and harmless photo opportunity to mark the beginning of demolition.

Surely, the Republicans and Ward can do better. The complaint called attention to DeStefano’s candidacy and made the Republicans look desperate by grasping at this silly charge. Perhaps, Ward should be investigated for practicing politics without a license.
