Hartford - New Haven Mayor John DeStefano on Thursday campaigned with Hartford hotel workers, seizing on a misstep by Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy in the race to win the Aug. 8 Democratic gubernatorial primary.

In a televised debate Tuesday night in New London, Malloy unfavorably compared hotel employment with "real jobs" as he defended government's use of eminent domain.

Malloy said, "If opportunities present themselves for real jobs - I'm not talking about hotel jobs. I'm not talking about arenas. I'm talking about real jobs that help build our economy - then it's a tool that needs to be retained but modified in its use and ... protections need to be provided."

He quickly apologized.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to say that I misspoke and that it was certainly not my intention to offend anyone, least of all the hardworking men and women who work in hotels across the state," he said in a letter to UNITE HERE, which represents workers in several hotels in Connecticut. The union has previously endorsed DeStefano.

DeStefano on Thursday criticized Malloy for his statements during the debate.

"I thought it was an insane comment," he said at a news conference outside the Hartford Hilton.

In a campaign event organized by DeStefano's campaign and UNITE HERE Local 217, DeStefano met with workers at the Hartford Hilton. "Never denigrate work," he told a group of workers.

Malloy's comment energized union activists, said Len Nalencz, who represents Hartford Hilton hotel workers.

"As soon as he said it, organizers were calling each other," he said.

Nadine Mullings-Gentles, who works at the hotel's front desk, said Malloy insulted hotel workers.

"I challenge him to come in and do it for one day," she said.
