AP: DeStefano unveils first ad in 2006 governor's raceAP June 20, 2006 By Susan Haigh New Haven - Mayor John DeStefano will launch the first television ad of this year's gubernatorial race early Tuesday morning, his campaign announced Monday. The 30-second spot, to air throughout the week, features the Democratic candidate talking about his plans to help working and middle-class families like his own when he was growing up in New Haven. In black and white footage, the ad shows a young boy walking with a police officer. A 1957 Chevrolet rolls past. "My dad was a police officer. Back then, working people could scrimp and save and become middle-class. It was a different time," DeStefano says in the ad. The ad then turns to color footage, with DeStefano pledging to provide health care for Connecticut citizens. "Today, the middle-class is hurting," DeStefano says. "As governor, I've got big plans, starting with universal health care to lower costs and cover everyone, including children." DeStefano faces an Aug. 8 primary against Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy, who narrowly won the Democratic nomination at the party's convention last month. Both hope to challenge Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell in November. Recent polls have shown that both Democrats suffer from name recognition problems. Fifty-nine percent of registered voters haven't heard enough about DeStefano, who ran a television ad last fall, to form an opinion, while 79 percent haven't heard enough about Malloy, according to a Quinnipiac University poll. Malloy's campaign has not yet announced when it will start running TV spots. "The Malloy campaign will go up on TV when we think it is appropriate," said Roy Occhiogrosso, a campaign spokesman. "We're doing everything that we need to do to win this primary and we feel comfortable with our strategy." Derek Slap, a DeStefano campaign spokesman, said the campaign wants to reach Democratic voters before they go away for the summer. Turnout on Aug. 8 is expected to be light. "We felt it was extremely important to start communicating with voters and to go up on television before people started to go on vacation for the July Fourth weekend and on into July," Slap said. The ads will begin airing at 5 a.m. on Tuesday on all the major network stations in Connecticut, as well as News 12, a cable station in Fairfield County. |
