Kathy DeStefano is not your typical political wife. A teacher and mother first, Kathy shys away from the political limelight. While Kathy muses that she’ll support “the other guy” she is committed to John’s candidacy because she knows that “he has worked tirelessly to make New Haven a better place to live and a place people are excited to visit. He has vision and a keen sense on how to achieve it. He is happiest when he is working towards a goal and his endless energy is the driving force that gets it done. He would make a fabulous Governor because his compassion and strong sense of community would embrace every town and city in this state. It would be selfish of me to deprive this state of such talent, which it truly is remarkable.”Born in 1955 in the Broadbrook section of East Windsor Kathy Kobelisnski lived in the same home as her grandmother, a Czechoslovakian immigrant. Kathy’s father was a production control foreman at Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford where he worked for 36 years. Her mother worked at a Hallmark Card’s factory where she did type work. As a teenager Kathy worked in the tobacco fields – waking up at 6 a.m. every morning she worked as a twister, a piler and a sower of tobacco leaves learning the value of hard work. But Kathy’s parents put a value on education, her father had graduated early from high school and had served four years as a Marine in the Korean War and he wanted his daughters to go to college.
Kathy and her sister Nancy attended public schools in East Windsor where Kathy graduated 7th in her class of 132 students. Kathy was well liked in high school - she was involved in the yearbook, the national honor society, and secretary of the senior class. She was active in drama and missed being voted best natured by only two points.
After high school Kathy packed up her purple pinto and headed off to the University of Connecticut. Kathy chose UConn because it was a big school and it was affordable. At UConn Kathy majored in Elementary education where she had a 3.6 GPA – earning a 3.9 in her major. It was in her senior year of college that she met John on a bus trip to Florida when she offered him a lemon drop cookie.
Soon after college Kathy married John. While John earned his masters – Kathy was already starting her career working as an actuary for the Hartford Insurance Group where she worked for 5 years. By that time she and John had moved to New Haven where he began his career of public service. In 1984 Kathy & John welcomed a son Dan. Kathy knew that a baby needs its mother and chose to stay home with Dan and his brother Jim who was welcomed into the family two years later. Kathy stayed at home until Jim started first grade when she too went to school. Kathy worked as a nursery school teacher at the Westville Community Nursery school where she had fun. She also was a soccer coach and headed the Westville Soccer League for four years.
Kathy went back to school and in 1998 she earned her masters in science education from Southern Connecticut State University. She now teaches kindergarten and serves as a supervisor and mentor for student teachers. Kathy loves what she does – the kids are really innocent, they treat you like a princess, give you hugs and just are really excited to be there. She knows that kindergarten is a child’s first experience in school and she works hard to make it a positive one.
